Many genealogy records on Croatia and Yugoslavia call the area HUNGARY. Even my own grandmother's Ellis Island (New York) records say she was from Hungary,
because at that time before World War One, it was governed by Austria-Hungary.
Some early records also refer to this area as AUSTRIA.
One person who entered the USA in 1910 was listed at Ellis Island as:
Josip Jauck of Kuzelj Austria.
Kuzelj is in present day Croatia, next to Skrad Croatia, and I believe this was my
grandfather's red-haired brother Joseph, who came to the USA and later returned
to Croatia.
The Croatian telephone listings are finally online,
so it is now possible to see where the Jauk's are still living.
I found 63 households listed publicly, and I see that most are still at
or near Tusti Vrh and Skrad. These are listed below by their closeness to Tusti Vrh.
Rijeka is a half-hour west, and Zagreb is an hour to the east.
Banjaloka Slovenia is 10 minutes to the north.
I would better understand how these family are related if I had more
details. Birthdates and middle names would also be very helpful...
Note: Five Croatian letters
do not display well on foreign computers, and are easily confused in other
languages. These were changed to their phonetic equivalents, as is commonly
done. Æ
[C~] was written as CH È [C'] was written as Ch Ð
[+D] was written as DG Š [S~] was written as SH Ž [Z~] was
written as ZH
Skrad and Tusti Vrh (Vrh means mountaintop)
Tusti Vrh - homestead of Matija(Mathias) and Josipa(Josephine)
Jauk, is a small village, on a mountaintop (el. 3000 ft), and is 2
miles away from the town of Skrad.
Skrad
is the hometown of Karolina Abromivic, and is by comparison, in
a valley, but this is actually a mountain pass or plateau between peaks
at (el. 2000 ft.).
Tusti Vrh and Skrad are both about 5 miles from Croatia's northern border
with Slovenia, and about 35 miles inland from the northern seaport of Rijeca.
A county map that helps put this in perspective is available here.
Also, a very good closeup map that shows Skrad and the terrain of the mountains
in the area is available here
(enlarged), or here
(smaller but navigable).
Thanks to Dr.
Mario Zagar of the University of Zagreb, we have access to his photos
of the Skrad/Tusti Vrh area in Gorski
kotar (Gorski county), Croatia. Dr. Zagar is from the nearby town of
Kupjak.
Five other towns very close by are: Ravna
Gora, Mrkopalj,
Lokve,
Delnice,
and Brod
Moravice. Click on any of these colored words for pictures and more
information. The Gorski
kotar link contains many other photos of towns and attractions of the
area.
About
Matija Jauk (c.1850)...
The
oldest known Jauk in my Croatian line goes back to Matija Jauk, born about
1850, and his brother Marko, who lived in Tusti Vrh, near Skrad, in
Gorski Kotar (county).
Matija
was my Great Grandfather, (shown here with his wife, my great grandmother
Josipa). Matija most accurately translates to Mathias.
Matija is buried in the Skrad cemetery; His headstone is shown being
visited by his grandson Matija (son of Johanna) in 1974. This grandson
is also at times
called Matic(meaning Matthew).
Matija is a variation of Matic, just as Mathias is a variation of Matthew.
Were Jauk Settlers in Croatia before 1850?
An Email from Tatjana, whose grandmother was from Fuzine (near Tusti Vrh)
said that there were early Jauk settlers in Croatia.
She said there is a history book of names in Gorski Kotar (county).
[ Author: Antun Buric', Rijeka 1979 ]
According to Tatjana: [with Notes by Larry]...
First, he describes the history of Gorski Kotar:
The area was devastated and uninhabitable for centuries
due to Turkish raids.
After the Turks were contained (the end of 17th C.), the area
was newly settled by people moving in from different parts
of Europe. As you probably know, in most German lands only
one son inherited the land, and the rest, war or no war,
had to look for another place to live.
Now, for the Jauks:
1st Jauk in Gorski Kotar: Joannes Jugh, Tusti Vrh, 1670.
[NOTE: 'gh' would be pronounced like the letter 'k']
Then, Matthaeus Giauk, in Tusti Vrh 1732
[NOTE: Giauk was probably pronounced like Jauk or Yauk ]
[ Giauk and Jugh are probably the same family as Jauk ]
There is in Turan 1734, Georgius[George] Jauk
[NOTE: There are two Turan towns. One is 30 miles west
of Tusti Vrh, one is ~30 miles east of Tusti Vrh]
and in Tusti Vrh 1735, Thomas Jauk.
Thank You, Tatjana!
Why were the Jauk's / Jauch's in Croatia?
In earlier centuries, this area was part of Austria and Germany, so it
was not surprising for Austrians or Germans to move there. After
the land was overrun by Ottoman Turks, and then liberated by Austria
Hungary, it was mostly void of people. The Austrian leadership
at Graz ordered the area populated as much as possible to keep the Turks
from returning. Some were given land in exchange for military service as
part of the "Military Frontier",
(and we know that Matija Jauk of Tusti Vrh served in the Austrian army).
My mother remembered hearing my Grandfather, George Jauk saying that
before moving to Croatia, the Jauk family was German.
Many settlers in Croatia were of German descent.
Most of these were Danube area Germans, called
Swabian Germans or "Donauschwaben".
The Donauschwaben migration was a large-scale migration of individuals and
families from German-speaking states to the areas of the former
Austro-Hungarian Empire reconquered from the Ottoman Empire during
the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. These settlers came from
areas of the ancient Suebi (Swabian) and Alemannic regions,
and encompassed portions of modern Baden-Württemberg,
Alsace, Lorraine, Switzerland, Austria, and other places in
the Austro-Hungarian Empire or the Rhineland-Palatinate.
Other Mathias Jauk's ?
Knowing how Europeans often named their children after themselves,
their parents, and their aunts and uncles, I also looked thru LDS records for
other Mathias Jauk's in history.
It may be that my gr-grandfather Mathias Jauk(~1850) of Tusti Vrh was
descendent of, or related to, one or more of the following people.
This may also suggest the origin of the Jauk family before Croatia:

[Note: Schwarzwaldkreis means Black Forest Township.
Also, this town of Deislingen also had a surname spelling
variation that was pronounced the same as Jauch or Jauk.
That spelling was Jaugh, and is very close to the early Tusti Vrh
settler ( Joannes Jugh ) ]

Matyas JAUCH - b. < 1865 Kernyaja, Hungary [now YUGOSLAVIA]
+Catharina HAHN{Jauch}, b. 17may1869 Kernyaja, Married: 13nov1894 at Kernyaja
I believe my Great Grandfather Matija Jauk may have been related to this
Matyas Jauch. There were at least six Mathias children in the Kernei
Yugoslavia Jauch families. Also, in the German town they came from
(Bochingen [in Black Forest Township]), there were at least two more children
named Mathias.
In Yugoslavia, those Jauch families were tightly bunched around the
Danube River in present-day (eastern Croatia, western Yugoslavia, and extreme
southern Hungary) Most records of that time just call the whole area Hungary.
Jauch's of the Danube Area of 'old' Hungary (eastern Croatia)
There were several towns containing Jauch's that were tightly grouped
around the Danube River, in an area called 'Hungary' before World
War One. These towns are at most 45 miles apart, and are in
present-day Eastern Croatia, Western Yugoslavia, and extreme southern Hungary.
All of these families may be related to each
other. And my own family at Skrad Croatia appears to be very possibly
related to them.
One of these Jauch families (of Ernestinova Croatia
) said they came
from the present-day German state of Baden-Würtemberg due to extreme
poverty in Germany.
Then after the Second World War they were
forced to emigrate back to Germany and settled in East-Germany.
Another of these Jauch families traces it roots back to the town of Bochingen,
Schwarzwaldkreis, Würtemberg/Germany.
[Schwarzwaldkreis means Black Forest Township.]
Their Yugoslavian town had at least 14 names, with Kernyaja, Kernei,
Kernai, and Kernau being the most common.
This town is in Bács-Bodrog county, Hungary (now Yugoslavia).
