Family of Charles B. Woodruff
Family of Charles B. Woodruff

Last Update: 15 September 2013

This is a brief overview of generations of my ancestors from my immediate family going back to my great-great-great grandparents' generation. It is as accurate as I can make it, based, whenever possible on personally verified source documents such as obituaries, gravestones, death certificates, etc. Due to privacy concerns, I have omitted all but basic information on people still living. More detailed information on my family to include transcriptions of many source documents may be found posted at the Rootsweb's WorldConnect site.

Note:Levi was a blacksmith. He was unable to speak the last several years of his life, probably due to a minor stroke. He died of peritonitis at Robert Packer Hospital. He was very easy going and well-liked. He loved children. I remember him putting clothespins on my ears when I was very little.

She was buried 26 Apr 1938 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of 18. Isaac B. HOWARD and 19. Emma C. SHANNON.

Note: Lib was an obese, course and profane woman. At about the age of 18, she lived with her older brother, Jerry Howard, and I've been told that she was difficult to get along with while living there. She was an excellent cook and kind to her grandchildren. Her death certificate lists her middle name as "Betsy."

Children of Elizabeth HOWARD and Levi Venorman WOODRUFF are:

Ella (Woodruff) Aumick with Mary Woodruff (Miles's daughter) in Auburn Center, Pennsylvania, in 1934.
Original photo given to me by Mary Woodruff Gordon in 1998.

He was buried 16 Apr 1951 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of 20. Peter Cress ACE and 21. Emeline F. PLACE.

Note: Charles was a farmer. He hated weeds and could often be seen pulling them out in his yard. He was a hard worker but wouldn't do farm work other than necessary chores on the Sabbath. Charles didn't care for foolishness and had no use for lazy people. His farm was on White Pond Road, a dirt road that apparently was on the path of an air route during World War I. He remarked at the time that he saw more airplanes flying overhead than cars driving by. He died at home a few hours after suffering a heart attack.

11. Alice GRESS was born 21 Sep 1865 in Hanover Twp, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and died 17 Feb 1959 in Meshoppen, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. She was buried 20 Feb 1959 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna, PA. She was the daughter of 22. Henry GRESS and 23. Susanna BURRIER.

He married Virginia TINKLEPAUGH on 17 Aug 1927 in Sodus Point, Wayne County, New York. She was born 18 Feb 1911, and died 31 Aug 1997. They divorced and he married Gertrude Elizabeth MCCONIGIE on 15 Apr 1933 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. She was born 24 Sep 1910, and died 8 Jul 1950.

Horace Morley in probably the late 1940s at Sheffield, Warren County, Pennsylvania.
I have the original photo.

12. Horace H. MORLEY was born 13 Jan 1857 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York, and died 17 Mar 1955 in Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania. He was buried 20 Mar 1955 in Barnes Cemetery, Barnes, Warren County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of 24. William J. MORLEY and 25. Julia SANDS.

Note: He and his wife lived in Deposit, Broome County, New York at the time of the 1880 census. Horace was said to be a heavy drinker and irresponsible. He worked for many years on the oil fields of western Pennsylvania.

13. Grace A. MAYBEE was born about August 1857 in New York, and died 12 Apr 1889 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York. She was buried 14 Apr 1889 in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock, Delaware County, New York. She was the daughter of 26. James F. MAYBEE and 27. Hannah MAGINNES.

Note: Grace was a school teacher who died during childbirth at age 31 years, 8 months. Supposedly her husband Horace was drinking instead of going for the doctor. Her grave is apparently unmarked.

Children of Grace A. MAYBEE and Horace H. MORLEY are:

i. Grace Augusta MORLEY was born 27 Jun 1880 in Pennsylvania, and died 21 Mar 1974 in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey. She married John Byron NITCHKE. He was born in 1872 in Pennsylvania and died 11 Mar 1924.

He married Lulu May PULIS, daughter of Oscar Mortimer PULIS and Euphemia Walker FAATZ, on 6 Dec 1911 in Afton, Chenango County, New York. She was born 28 Mar 1891 in Lestershire, Broome County, New York, and died 23 Oct 1972 in Johnson City, Broome County, New York.

14. Oscar Mortimer PULIS was born 22 Dec 1854 in Dyberry Twp, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and died 3 Feb 1935 in Vallonia Springs (Afton), Chenango County, New York. He was buried 5 Feb 1935 in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, Chenango County, New York. He was the son of 28. James Mortimer PULIS and 29. Jane BROWN.

Note: Oscar was a small, meek man who read the Bible nearly every evening. He was fussy with his tools and always wiped them down after using them. He liked to please his wife and would sometimes come home with a pretty dish he'd bought for her. He and his family lived in South Dakota from 1896 until 1903. According to his death certificate, he had lived on a farm in Vallonia Springs (near Afton), New York, for 20 years prior to his death. He died after an illness of 12 days of nephritis (kidney inflammation). Shirley Woodruff remembers going to the farm when he was dying. She was not allowed in the bedroom where he was lying because he was so ill.

Photograph of Euphemia (Faatz) Pulis taken in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, in probably the 1880s.
I have the original photo.

15. Euphemia Walker FAATZ was born 20 Dec 1859 in Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, and died 12 Feb 1947 in Afton, Chenango County, New York. She was buried in 1947 in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, Chenango County, New York. She was the daughter of 30. Henry G. FAATZ and 31. Jane E. MAYHEW.

Note: Euphemia was a fiesty woman who was boss of her household and refused to be pushed around by anyone. She said said she was going to stay on the farm as it was her home when daughter Lulu offered Euphemia the chance to move in with her and her family. Euphemia wore her hair in a bun. She liked to take rides in the car and hated to stay at home if the others were going somewhere. Euphemia and Oscar used to drive down to Lulu's home for Sunday dinner where Lulu would prepare delicious roast beef and mashed potatoes with dark brown gravy. She used a cane when she was old and had an anemic condition that required her to take iron pills. She died at 5:20PM.

Children of Euphemia Walker FAATZ and Oscar Mortimer PULIS are:

Grave of Enos and Emma (Green) Woodruff in Jersey Hill Cemetery,
on Route 267 near Auburn Center, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
Gravestone of son, George, is at the left.
Photograph was taken on February 25, 2002.

16. Enos T. WOODRUFF was born 13 Feb 1840 in Canada, and died 2 Sep 1911 in Auburn Center, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was buried 4 Sep 1911 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of 32. Russell WOODRUFF and 33. Elmina Charity BULL.

Note: Enos's middle name may be Thomkins. He and his older brother, George, were sent to live with their uncle Morris Woodruff in Orwell, Bradford County, PA, shortly after their father's death in 1850. Enos was a woodworker, lumberjack, mail hauler, and wagon maker. Listed on the 1870 U.S. census as a 25-year-old wagon maker with A. J. Baldwin. His birthdate is in dispute. Death certificate shows 71 years, 6 months, 20 days. The 1880 census states age 38 while 1900 census states he was born in February 1843. Gravestone shows birth year of 1846. He and his wife bought a house and lot in Auburn Center in 1908 for $200. After their deaths, son Miles lived in the house until 1961. The house later burned. Enos died as the result of apoplexy (stroke).

Emma (Green) Woodruff in her yard in Auburn Center, Pennsylvania, in about 1920.
On the back of the photo it lists the others as Emma's brother Charles Green
with his daughter-in-law Mary (Briggle) Green and grandson Miles Green but I believe this is incorrect.
I am not sure who they are.
Original photo given to me by Mary Woodruff Gordon in 1998.

17. Emma GREEN was born 13 Aug 1850 in Pennsylvania, and died 10 Apr 1928 in Auburn Center, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. She was buried 13 Apr 1928 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of 34. Alexander GREEN and 35. Jane Elizabeth EVANS.

Note: She is listed as a 19-year-old domestic servant for Samuel Tewksbury on the 1870 U.S. census for Auburn Township (page 117). Mary Woodruff Gordon said that one of Emma's grandmothers came from Ireland and that Emma had an Irish temper. She could neither read nor write. She sewed beautiful quilts in her old age of which I have the one that belonged to her son, Miles.

I have a copy of the original photo.

20. Peter Cress ACE was born 9 Aug 1830 in Shawnee, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, and died 12 Jan 1891 in Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in 1891 in Jersey Hill Cemetery, Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of 40. J. George ACE and 41. Maria Magdelena (or Polly) CRESS.

Note: Peter died of pneumonia. Bryce Woodruff said Charles Ace told him he got sick while leading a bull home in the rain from Meshoppen, PA. He bought a farm outside of South Auburn, PA in 1860, where he lived until his death. Sherman Ace later lived there and it was the site of the first Ace reunion on Aug. 21, 1907. Fred Ace then lived and farmed there until 1943, when it was sold to the Carlin family. The house later stood empty for many years and fell into serious disrepair. It became part of a pasture and cows roamed in and out of it. A large flat stone sat in the middle of the kitchen floor for the stove to set on. It was cracked when I saw it. The house was torn down by Gilbert Carlin in the summer of 1979. I salvaged some Civil War era newpapers that were glued to the kitchen walls under the wallpaper. A house trailer now occupies the site. The original barn still stands and is in use. The road is called Ace Road. Peter Ace was called up for the Civil War and paid $300. for a substitute to take his place according to what Charles Ace told Bernice Warrington.
