Don't forget about the annual fish fry on July 3rd and Bar-B-Q on the July 4th. Held on the Church grounds across from the Cemetery, every year .. rain or shine, it goes on. There has to be money raised to care for the Oak Grove Cemetery and Church grounds. It is being surrounded by million dollar homes. I am sure they would like to consider Oak Grove Cemetery abandoned. That will happen if we do not keep it cleaned. The graves could be moved and roads would be widened. It is called progress.

We try to arrive 3 or 4 days early to clean the grounds and set up the kitchen. About 11 AM, July 3rd, a huge pot of pinto beans is started. One year someone put all the beans in the pot and set them on the stove. They were boiling good, when Rose looked at me and said "who picked and washed the beans?" ... Oops. No one had washed the beans. They were probably the best beans we had ever cooked.

About 5 PM, the men start frying fresh fish, hush puppies, onion rings, garden squash and whatever else they can find. The ladies bring fresh garden vegetables and wonderful home made cakes, pies and cobblers.

After the fish is eaten and the grounds quite down, the men start the Bar-B-Q and settle down to some serious domino playin'. This was Aunt Mae's favorite time. She would stay up all night playin' dominoes. Aunt Mae will be with us forever in our hearts.

The next day, people start coming from all directions. Some have kin in the cemetery and some come for the good food and fellowship. They are all welcome. They are asked for donations, but no one has ever been turned away. Many families bring home cooked food to add to the Bar-B-Q. The long serving tables are so full, you can hardly set your plate down.
There is live music and singing. There are tables and benches shaded by live oak trees. The banks Bull Creek aren't far away.

After lunch, we all pitch in to wash up and clean the kitchen. After the crowd leaves, late in the evening, we get out the ice cream makers and reward ourselves with home made ice cream.

On July fifth, everyone starts loading up and heading off in different directions to go home. We hope every one will be able to come back next year.
