The English surname "Tabor" comes in many forms:Tabar, Taber, Taberer, Tabers, Tabor, Tabors, Tabour, Taybor, Tayber, Taybour, Tabur, Taborn. It's meaning (Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, 1977) has it's origins in Medival English and Old French and is defined as "a small drum with one head of soft calfskin used to accompany a pipe or fife played by the same person", and a Taborer as "one that plays on the tabor". We would like to think of him as a traveling minstral. However, the name Tabor pre-dates the Medevial period as it can be found in Old Testament literature as the name of a mountain located in the mid-eastern Arabic nation of Palestine. The most common spellings currently in use are Taber and Tabor.
