1002. Mary Ruth Reitz from The Punxsutawney Spirit
Mary Ruth Reitz, 81, of Laurelbrooke
Landing, passed away at Brookville Hospital on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. She
was born May 31, 1931, at Cloverdale Farm in Stanton, Pa., the youngest
child of the late Harry Webster and Jessie Ruth (Brosius) Reitz. She never
married.
After graduating from Brookville High
School and Grove City College with an associate degree, Mary Ruth worked as
a secretary/bookkeeper at Brookville Equipment; as a secretary to Milton
Eisenhower, president of Penn State; and as a secretary for James Hysong,
superintendent of Brookville Area Joint Schools.
She then graduated from Indiana
University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. and taught in the business department
at Brookville Area Schools for one semester. At the suggestion of her
brother Jack, she served as a missionary in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo. Her expertise in accounting enabled her to audit existing accounts,
to establish bookkeeping systems as needed, and to teach missionaries and
Congolese how to keep accurate financial records.
She returned to the United States and
worked in accounting for the Board of Global Ministries of the United
Methodist Church, and later for the World Council of Churches, until her
retirement. As a resident of New York City’s Upper West Side for more than
40 years, Mary Ruth took advantage of the many concerts, operas, theater
performances, museums and parks that the city has to offer. She eagerly
shared those experiences with any family and friends who would visit her.
A person of deep faith, she was
actively involved in many ministries of St. Paul and St. Andrew United
Methodist Church, mentoring, nurturing and supporting young people. She was
passionate about political and social action.
The highlight of her return to
Brookville had been the opportunity to spend more time with family and get
to know the newest members. She had particularly enjoyed sharing the
fountain at Laurelbrooke Landing with visitors.
She is survived by two
sisters-in-law, Doris Thrush of Brookville and Margaret Reitz, Suffolk, Va.;

1003. Jo Stahlman, Dec. 11,
1929-June 28, 2012 from The Ames Iowa tribute, 06/30/2012
Loretta Joan Stahlman was born in
Foley, Ala. where her parents were working as migrant farmers. In 1930 they
moved to a dairy farm near Carlisle, where she grew up. After graduating
from high school, she worked as a bookkeeper in Des Moines and helped her
sister and brother-in-law with their restaurant there.
After her divorce from her first
husband, Louis Berard, she met Clarence Stahlman at a VFW dance in Des
Moines. In 1957 they were married and moved to Ames. Following the birth of
her daughter, Cathy, the family moved north of Ames to an acreage, where she
lived until her death. Jo loved animals and farm life, and spent many hours
working on the house, buildings, and gardens. She was a 4H leader and taught
everything from sewing to furniture refinishing.
Jo worked at Randall Foods for many
years. After retirement, she cared for Clarence until his death in 1994. She
enjoyed many hobbies, especially woodcarving, and was an avid reader. When
her health declined, she began attending Adult Daycare at Heartland Senior
Services, where she made many friends and enjoyed the activities. She looked
forward to the birth of new lambs on the farm, and insisted on going out to
see the ‘new babies’ no matter how bad she felt. It was a big disappointment
to her when she could no longer do the mowing on the John Deere she was so
proud of.
Jo died peacefully at home. She was a
wonderful friend, a great mom, and a strong and talented woman. She is
survived by two sisters, Mae Wells and Pearl Lancaster; her daughter, Cathy;
and many nieces and nephews. She requested no funeral, and donated her body
for medical research. Memorials in Jo’s name may be made to Heartland Adult
Daycare where she spent so many pleasant hours.

1022. Orlando P Shoemaker
unknown Newspaper
The body of Orlando P Shoemaker, New
Bethlehem RD 3, farmer, was found last Saturday evening in the field where
he had been discing with a tractor.
Mr. Shoemaker was last seen about
2:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Dr. David L. Miller, of this place, issued a
certificate of accidental death due to a brain injury. This injury was
suffered, it is presumed, when he fell from the tractor while it was in
motion and fell upon the disc harrow, striking his head with sufficient
force to cause death. The finding of Dr. Miller was approved by the Clarion
County Coroner, J. Ward Kier. Dr. Miller made a post mortem examination of
the body which was used as the basis for his report. No inquest was held.
Since there were no witnesses to the
tragedy, it is supposed that Mr. Shoemaker had reached back to operate a
lever of the disc harrow, lost his balance and fell upon the machine.
Although the body was bruised and cut to some extent, there was no reason to
believe that the machine had passed over it.
The tractor kept on going until it
was stopped by trees. it did not turn over and was only slightly damaged.
Mr. Shoemaker was working in a field
about half a mile from his home. He lived with his mother, Mrs. Clara Leach.
When Mr. Shoemaker did not return in the evening Mrs. Leach, becoming
alarmed, sent a neighbor boy to investigate. He found the body in the field.

in Porter Township, a son of David Elmer Shoemaker 1863-1911 and Clara E
Stahlman Shoemaker d 1957. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Clara Leach

were out driving in a sedan and were coming toward Clarion at about 9:30

collision with a light Pennzoil truck or tank with the result that all six
persons were more or less seriously injured and Mr. Shea died from his
injuries shortly afterward.
The sedan was going toward Venus and
was on the way back to Clarion. The truck was going toward Oil City. Just
how they got into collision is not known at this writing. The State Police

found work in the smelters at a steel mill. He was 55 years old at the time
and they were not hiring anyone over the age of 50. He lied about his age
and got a job.
On October 7, 1950, Lucy died in
Pittsburg, Kansas. Louis died of Parkinson's disease in New Eagle,
Pennsylvania on March 22, 1953. He is buried in Monongahela Cemetery in
Monongahela, Pennsylvania. His son, Paul visited him over the last 18 months
of his father's life. Even though Louis had Parkinson's and couldn't
remember where he was, he would sit and tell Paul about a barn he had built
in Arkansas. He talked about the construction as though it was being built
now. In 1990, Paul died in Bakersfield, California of Parkinson's disease
like his father.

1048. Godfrey Reitz
(AKA Johan Godfried Reitz) The Jeffersonian Democrat 07/25/1895
The subject of this sketch, died
suddenly at his home at Cool Spring, on Friday, July 19, about 6 o`clock in
the evening, the immediate cause being neuralgia of the heart. It will be
remembered by many that about fourteen years ago, Mr. Reitz was pronounced
dead, and that preparations were begun for his funeral when to the surprise
of all he showed signs of life, rallied, and was soon about as usual. Since
then he has had remarkably good health for one of his age, and has done a
great deal of hard work. On the day previous to his death he worked in the
hay field, but in the evening complained that he did not feel so well as
usual, but nothing serious was thought of it, for the next morning he got up
as was his custom, kindled the kitchen fire, and went about his morning
chores.
After breakfast he did not feel well enough to go to his work and
during the forenoon, Dr. Bleakney of Worthville was summoned. But he could
not have thought the case at all dangerous, because he said nothing to the
family that would indicate this. Mr. Reitz ate a hearty dinner, and was up
and about the house at times during the afternoon. When the end came he was
lying upon the bed fanning himself, and his wife was at the window watching
some children playing around the yard. Her only warning of his nearness to
death was a slight noise coming from the direction of the bed, and, turning,
she saw, that the fan which he held had fallen upon his face. She hastened
to his side and spoke to him, but received no reply, he seeming not to
recognize her. She then began to realize his condition, and before any
members of the family could be summoned he had breathed his last and
departed this life.
Godfrey Reitz was of German descent,
and born in Northumberland county, Pa, April 1st 1820, being 74 yrs., 3 mo.,
18 days old when he died. He has lived in Jefferson county in Beaver
Township and in Oliver, since he was 12 years old.
July 31st 1842, he married Catharine
Thomas, who still survives him. To them were born 12 children, 8 girls and 4
boys. Ten of these are now living, and were present at the funeral. There
are 84 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Deceased has two brothers
and two sisters still living. Funeral services were conducted on Sabbath at
10 a.m. by Prof. Percy H. Gordon, and interment was at St. Paul Lutheran
church south of Cool Spring. Mr. Reitz was an exemplary citizen and had the
respect and friendship of all who knew him, which fact was fully manifested
by the large concourse of people which followed his remains to their last
resting place. "NEIGHBOR"

1071. Marion (Alsobrook)
Stahlman from the Logansport (Indiana) Journal, Sat Feb 16, 1901
South Bend, Ind., Feb.15 — The death of Mrs. J. D.(sic-Douglas Monroe)
Stahlman, of Valparaiso, today caused great excitement among her relatives
and friends, and had it not been for the promptness of the officers in
placing her husband under arrest harm would have befallen him. Mrs. Stahlman
died from the results of child birth, having been seriously, although not
fatally ill until this morning when her husband arrived from Chicago. He
immediately ordered the physician out of the house being determined that his
wife should embrace the Dowie faith. Less than two hours after the discharge
of the physician the woman died. Both Stahlman and his wife are well known
people and apparently in good circumstances. It is claimed that Stahlman is
insane over religion.
From The English News, Friday, February 22, 1901, English, Indiana Valparaiso, Ind. Feb. 15 — Mrs. Stahlman, wife of Douglas Stahlman, the
Dowieite, was buried in Maplewood cemetery. Her two little children were
taken home by her brother. It has developed that an organization of 1000
students of the normal school had been - ?profected and had Stahlman been
released he would have been tarred and feathered and probably hanged. The
feeling here is so high that there will be an attempt to adjudge other
Dowieites insane. 1072.

1084. Anna Elizabeth (Walgran)
Luetke from
host.madison.com/news
MADISON - Bette Luetke competed a
journey on Nov. 24, 2012, surrounded by family.
She was born Anna Elizabeth
Walgran on May 21, 1918, in Bloomsburg, Pa. At the time of her birth, her
father, Charles Walgran, did not see her for a year, as he was in France, a
Lieutenant with the 311th Machine Gun Battalion during World War I. As a
little girl, growing up with her younger sister, Catherine and brother,
Robert, on Market Street in Lewisburg, Pa., Bette played the violin, played
basketball, served as club president of the Girls’ League, was a decorated
Camp Fire Girl, a lifeguard, an honor student, and in her junior year at
Lewisburg High School, was elected May Queen. Her qualities of leadership
and strong friendships would be passed on to all of her children and
grandchildren.
Bette stirred herself into life
in Madison like an ingredient into a new recipe. A beautiful, social young
woman, Bette met her future husband, William Vernon Luetke, at the
University of Wisconsin and later received a ring for Christmas, 1941, at
the home of Arthur and Mayme Luetke in Ontario, Wis.
Bette finished "top of her class"
in nursing school, and was the first to receive her nursing pin on
graduation day, June 1, 1942. She stood proudly in her white uniform and
cap, and was cheered by her Delta, Delta, Delta sorority sisters, an
organization in which she formed friendships that were dear to her
throughout her life. Bette graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree at 10
a.m., and then she and Bill got married at 2 p.m. that same afternoon. Bette
was later thrilled, when almost 70 years later, her granddaughter, Jessica
used diamonds from her engagement ring in her own ring, for her marriage in
2011, and at 92, called her on that special day.
Before her new husband was
shipped out with the U.S. Navy in 1943, they moved about pursuing Bill’s
medical career and after the unfortunate loss of three infant children,
moved back to Madison, having four children in the next six years. Bette
studied cooking and always made beautifully decorated cookies for birthdays
and the holidays, and each night cooked amazing family meals. She read
extensively throughout her life and was a member of many book clubs,
attended Methodist church, was a champion bridge player, a scouting Den
Mother, and an Attic Angel. She was awed by talent and beauty, loved naming
flowers and trees, and routinely gathered up those who had no place to go
for holidays. She was a great "scrap-booker" and the lives of her family are
documented in some 75 albums of photos, event memorabilia and pictures that
she personally took, labeled, and organized.
Bette retired with Bill to
Naples, Fla., and later moved to Texas to be near two of her grandchildren,
Marcy and Mary Pat. Her own "Birthday Book” had 3-4 names on every line, and
many remember Bette's ministry of letter writing. To the end, she was up to
date on news about her friends and family, and even towards the last, often
asking her dear friend and special care-giver, Debbie Shaw, to send out a
card.
Bette was preceded in death by
her husband, Bill in 2011; her parents; sister; brother and three infant
children. She is survived by four children, Art (Linda Collins) of Madison,
Bill Jr. of Red Lodge, Mont., Dr. Barbara of Seattle, Wash., and Dr. Charles
(Jennifer Rex) of Micanopy, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Trevor, Jessica,
Breeze Elizabeth (Kelsey), Hannah, Mary Pat (Brandon), Marcy (fiancee,
Robert), Maya and Eli; along with five great-grandchildren, Tay, Gus, Iggy,
Bella and Khloe, as well as very special people in her life, Susan Luetke
and Kent Stahlman.
Bette Luetke will be buried in Ontario, Wis., beside her husband and
children, in a special family ceremony at a later date. Having spoken in one
of her final days, "I will see you in heaven," she begins yet a new journey.
