 FARSTADNEWS IN BRIEF 2006 Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all of you from all of us in the Northernmost State! (SMILE) Another busy year in Alaska is almost at an end. We are all doing well health-wise, thanks to God! It has been a good year! Don is still at the Fairbanks North Star Borough. It will be eleven years in January 2007. There are always changes going on there with the computer systems; it just never ends�. (SMILE) I (Barbara) have been working part-time for the City of Fairbanks Federal Credit Union for nine years now. I enjoy it and it keeps me busy a couple of days a week. My manager and the credit union board members are great to work for! (SMILE) Grace has now been at her job at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (our local newspaper) for over two years. That keeps her busy! She is also taking Karate again. She did that twenty years ago. She is always on the go! (SMILE) Don and I will celebrate our eleventh anniversary this year. We are still very happily enjoying our life together! (SMILE) This year for my birthday, Don and I "rode the rails." We took the Alaska Railroad down to Denali National Park for an overnight trip. It was the early days of our short autumn season and the fall colors were wonderful! We took a short walk to the Nenana River which was just below our Hotel. The weather was warm and clear the first day. We even saw Denali from the train when we got to Nenana! The next day it was rainy and cold, but we still managed to see some Dall Sheep from the train on the return trip home. There were several Magpies around and the squirrels were stockpiling food away for the coming winter snows. We visited the new Denali Visitor Center while we waited for the train ride home. It is really nice! The displays are fresh and new and it is really interesting. We also took a short forest trail hike and noticed that it was a "mushroom year" in Denali Park, as well as in Fairbanks! A few weeks earlier we had seen thousands of mushrooms while walking at Creamer's Field Boreal Forest Trail. We have both gotten into feeding the wild birds again this winter. Don hangs the feeders out and refills the seeds, and I take pictures of the birds when they come to eat! (SMILE) We are really enjoying watching the birds that show up. We saw a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers this winter - it's a first for both of us. Last year the smaller Downy Woodpeckers were coming to the suet feeders. This year we have both the Downy and the Hairy Woodpeckers coming. It is also a Redpoll year. The Redpoll population fluctuates yearly, and this year they are out in force! I have counted upwards of ninety birds on the various feeders at one time! They are so cute and curious. They check out everything and even hover near the windows to look in at us! (SMILE) We have also seen a Gray Jay and a Pine Grosbeak in our yard. Several Ravens and Pigeons are around this year, and I saw a Dark-eyed Junco with a huge flock of Redpolls. Juncos should have all migrated to the lower 48 states for the winter, but this one must have waited too long. There are also Black-Capped Chickadees visiting the feeders. We were feeding a huge flock of Mallard Ducks in the Chena River, but I think most of them must have finally migrated south. Some of them seemed pretty tame for being wild birds. They would fly to the shore from the water whenever anyone was walking on the shore! (SMILE) I saw two more new birds last Spring. A pair of American Widgeons were in the Chena River with the Mallards and also a Lesser Yellow-Legs. I finally got some nice pictures of Bohemian Waxwings this year.
