1885 Thomas Heraty's Diary

Jan. 1	Sun	Bub ? Murphy and Maggy O'Keefe were called to be married.
Jan. 6	Sun	Ann Strong was buried. Henry Skelton and Ellen Kiernan married on the 7th.
Jan. 22	Thur	Anastasia was taken sick with sore throat and was very sick all night.
Jan. 23	Fri	Anastasia darling, died at 9:20 p.m. None being present but Mary Connell and ourselves.
Jan. 24	Sat	Up and around in the morning after waking Anastasia all night. Ed went to Plymouth for coffin. Got back at 10 a.m. John, Bill, Gibbons and Kilcoin dug grave. Funeral after church at 3 p.m. All others not feeling well but Tommy and Patty being the worst.
Jan. 25	Sun	The little ones quite sick. Held a consultation. Scarlet Fever.
Jan. 27	Tue	Pat McNicholas married. Bad prospects this morning for Tom and Pat. May go at any time. Tommy died at 1 � p.m. Patrick died at 2 � p.m. Father Casey called at 2 p.m. Had 5 masses ordered.
Jan. 28	Wed	Tom and Pat were buried today in one grave.
Feb. 10	Tue	Coldest in years. 30 degrees below in the morning. Wind a gale and snowing a light thin snow that would pass through a pipestem. 14 degrees below all day.
March 21	Sat	M. Collin's had auction.
March 25	Wed	Holy Day. Bill Scanlan and Miss Murray (Lib) called.
March 30	Mon	Old Michael Bowser buried today.
April 5	Sun	Easter Sunday. Priest Casey took up a collection. Paid 50 cents. Patt Gallagher and Brookmeyer were called to be married.
April 7	Tue	Town meeting. Re-elected. Got home at 12 � p.m.
April 9	Thur	Patt Gallagher and Mrs. Brookmire were married by Reverend Casey.
April 19	Sun	Ellen Brogan and Masterson were called to be married.
April 21	Tue	Brogan giving bids for wedding.
April 29	Tue	Ellen T. Brogan and James Masterson were married at Cascade by Reverend Casey.
May 3	Sun	Johnny Mullen and old Mrs. Jack Gilboy were buried.
May 15	Fri	Started on foot at 7:45 a.m. for the church to meet the funeral of John Early, who was buried today.
May 17	Sun	Mike Fitzpatrick was buried.
May 20	Wed	Children at the church getting ready for Confirmation.
May 21	Thur	Bishop Heiss giving Confirmation at Cascade. Johnny and Ellen were confirmed.
June 4	Thur	Holy Day. Corpus Christi.
June 7	Sun	Johnny Syles for a grand reception at Osceola church today from the {Blacks}. He got a liberal coat of tar and other indignities. June 11	Thur	Slattery had barn raising. Ed helped all day. Dance there at night.
June 17	Wed	Carlin's little girl died with a sore throat.
July 10	Fri	Twin boy and girl born at John Lindsay's.
July 17	Fri	John Carlin buried his 2nd child with a sore throat.
July 23	Thur	J. F. Murray married Sarah Butler at Cascade by Reverend Casey. Dance at P. Scott's barn.
Aug. 15	Sat	Soldiers picnic at Cascade and church picnic at Dundee.
Aug. 23	Sun	Bernard Devoy was buried. "Lord have mercy on his soul." "Amen."
Aug. 30	Sun	Late mass at Mitchell, also at Osceola by Reverend Father Martin. A girl baby born to the Cahill's at 6 a.m.
Sept. 6	Sun	At Daley's in Fond du Lac. Attended mass at Father Willard's church.
Sept. 13	Sun	Late mass at Mitchell. Self and little ones attended. Also Kansas Johnny Heraty and his daughter, and Gallagher family all here for dinner.
Sept. 17	Thur	Old Mrs. Jerry Murphy died at 7 � o'clock p.m.
Sept. 19	Sat	Old Mrs. Jerry Murphy buried.
Oct. 25	Sun	Young Matt Leakes (Seakes) was buried at home at 11 � p.m.
Nov. 26	Mon	Patt Sellars died at 9 a.m. Old Kearns (Kenner) buried today.
Nov. 28	Wed	Patt Sellars buried.
Dec. 28	Tue	Owen Failey and Ellen Jordan married.
