HISTORIAN LOSES TWO CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS THIS YEAR

Your family reunion historian, an in-law to the Dobberstein name, lost two close family members during 2003, his mother Irmgard Cole & uncle Arthur Schoennauer, pictured above in a photo taken in 2002 near their father's grave site in Seattle.  In April, Bob's Uncle Art passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer in Medford, Oregon.  In November, Bob's mother Irma died unexpectedly swift after a short fight with a similar cancer in Tacoma, Washington.  Unlike her brother, she had failed to be diagnosed with the disease until far too late.  Ironically she was buried in a grave site next to her father's body almost at the exact spot she was standing for this photo.

Both of their obituaries, as well as a guest book for friends and family, can be viewed on-line at the following links:

REUNION HISTORIAN MOBILIZED FOR WAR EFFORT

In September, Bob Cole was once again called to join in the war effort, but unlike 12 years ago when he went to Saudi Arabian for Desert Shield/Desert Storm, he expects to stay at Ft Bragg, North Carolina for possibly a year to assist in getting other Army Reserve and National Guard units ready for deployment to the war zone.  After 27 years in the military, he says, "This time I'll leave the desert warfare to the younger soldiers."  He is assigned to the 2125th Garrison Support Unit, and joined his new unit at Ft Bragg on Oct 1st.  He hopes there will be no change in assembling and printing the family reunion newsletter in 2003, but admits that a lot depends on the course of world affairs and how busy he will be at Ft Bragg next spring.

2000 DOBBERSTEIN REUNION

The 52nd annual Dobberstein reunion was held today at Hatten Park in New London, Wisconsin.  About 75 people attended, shared a delicious pot-luck meal, and enjoyed renewing old acquaintances and family memories.  Copies of the annual family reunion newsletter were distributed to family members.  Excerpts from this year's newsletter are reprinted herein (including original scanned photo images), and can be linked under the selections below:

DOBBERSTEIN PHONE DIRECTORY

On a recent visit to the Appleton Public Library I downloaded all the Dobberstein names identified on the special computer loaded with the Power Finder Phone Disc, a set of CDs published in 1999 by InfoUSA which is a compilation of addresses and phone numbers from all over the United States. They are divided into geographical regions: central, mid-atlantic, midwest, northeast, southeast and western. These Dobberstein surnames are presented as downloaded, with no attempt made on my part to correct or update any of the data.

DOBBERSTEIN QUERY

Shown below is a note of inquiry from Janice Shaw <[email protected]> about information regarding a possible Dobberstein connection. Does anyone have further information? If so, please respond to her directly (adding my e-mail address as the "cc" if you would). I've included a map of the Stroebe Island area to the right. (Stroebe Island is located on Little Lake Butte des Mortes on the far southwest corner of Appleton, Wisconsin.

"This is going to sound strange, but I am looking for any info on the surname STROEBE who would have married a Dobberstein. This Dobberstein probably bought a tavern that was located on Stroebe Island and ran it until he sold it. I believe that this might have been in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, near Appleton.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and possibly have some info for me.

Thanks, Janice"

GLEANINGS AND EXTRACTS OF OTHER INTERNET WEB SITES WITH DOBBERSTEIN CONNECTIONS

Here are extracts of miscellaneous genealogical references to the Dobberstein name, from compilations and collections of other Internet sites. While most of the references are unconnected to the Herman Dobberstein ancestry, many are familiar, with connections to other Dobbersteins I researched for the recently published Dobberstein Registry book.

HANNAH DOBBERSTEIN'S DEATH

On one of my casual searches through an internet search browser I noticed a familiar Dobberstein name in an obituary notice from my old home town of Tacoma, Washington and was immediately curious. On further investigation I learned the subject of the obituary and an accompanying news article was young Hannah Dobberstein, daughter of Tom and Pat Dobberstein. Tom is the son of Elmer and Thelma Dobberstein, formerly of Michigan. She died tragically in the service of her country in Kuwaitt.
