HISTORIC IRISH MANSIONS by James Fleming.

No. 223:          K I N T U R K,   Co. Westmeath.

Former Residence of the Pollard-Urquhart Family.

The family of POLLARD of Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath, is of great antiquity. originally of Devonshire, where, according to Fuller in his "Worthies" of that county, several of the name were distinguished as lawyers, judges, statesmen and warriors, during the reigns of the Edwards and the Henrys of England; and whence Captain NICHOLAS POLLARD, son of Sir Hugh, accompanied Robert, Earl of Essex, to Ireland, and settled in Westmeath, where he had a grant of the castle and lands of Mayne.

He was the founder of the family that for more than three and a half centuries remained closely associated with the political and social life of the historic district in which they had made their home.

Little is known of Captain Pollard's military achievements under the unfortunate Essex in Ireland, but the grant of the rich lands of Mayne in an indication that his services were valued highly. He was father of Nicholas Pollard born in 1567, the founder of the pretty little town of Castlepollard.

This Nicholas Pollard's son Walter, married Ismay, daughter of Richard Nugent, of Cargeen, Co. Roscommon, by whom he had a son Walter.  Walter Pollard,  senior, surrendered all his lands to the King for the purpose of having them erected into a manor, and they were so constituted by Letters Patent 36 Charles II. by the name of Castlepollard. He also received a patent for holding fairs and a weekly market, and an order from the Lord Deputy and Council for building a church in the town. He died in 1685.

FOUGHT AGAINST JAMES II.

Walter Pollard, junior, served in the army of Charles I., and, though attached to the cause of the Stewarts at that period, he joined the forces of William III. against James; and was appointed a Commissioner for raising supplies in Westmeath in the years 1695, 1697, and 1698. He represented the County in Parliament, and was High Sheriff in 1692.

This gentleman married Elizabeth, daughter of Arthur Dillon, of Lismullen, Co. Meath, and had one son and one daughter. Dying in 1718, he was succeeded by his son, Dillon Pollard, of Castle Pollard, Barrister -at-Law, and M.P. for Westmeath. Dying without issue, his sister and heir, Letitia Pollard, of Castle Pollard, married in 1696, Major Charles Hampson, High Sheriff, Co. Cavan, 1698 and 1715, and for Westmeath in 1729.

Major Hampson assumed the name and arms of Pollard, and died on the 1st August, 1729. His eldest son, and successor, Dillon Pollard of Castlepollard .

So you See The Pollard's of Castle Pollard really haven't been anything but Pollard in-laws for generations .The reason that they changed their name to Pollard was that it was a Stipulation in the Will, that to inherit the Castle you had to bare the Pollard name . Only the Rich and Corrupt would take that to mean you could change you name to inherit! There were cousins that still carried the Pollard name. How would this play out in a modern court?? Would the conditions of the Will be thrown out? or would they insist as the Will seems to stipulate that it go to the closest relative still honestly holding the Pollard name ??

Know any Lawers ??

"So Here is their Genealogy Anyway !

P O L L A R D

Kinturk.

The family of POLLARD is of great antiquity in Devonshire, several of which were distinguished during the reigns of the Edwards and Henrys, as lawyers, judges, statesmen, and warriors. Fuller in his "Worthies- of Devonshire, mentions several of them, who were equally celebrated in the different professions which they selected to follow.

Captain NICHOLAS POLLARD (son of Sir Hugh Pollard of Devonshire,) who first settled in Ireland, accompanied Walter, Earl of Essex, in the reign of Elizabeth and had a grant of the castle and lands of Mayne, in this county, and of other lands, in capite, for military service well and duly performed. His son Nicholas, born in 1567, built the castle of Rathyoung, which he called Castle Pollard, and was father to Walter, who succeeded at Castle Pollard on the death of his father. He was living in 1637. He surrendered all his lands to the King, for the purpose of having them erected into a Manor; by Letters patent, dated 36th Charles II., they were so constituted by the name of Castle Pollard. He also received a patent for holding fairs and a weekly market; and an order from the Lord Lieutenant and Council for building a Church at Castle Pollard.

He married Ismay, daughter of Richard Nugent of Cargeen, in the county of Roscommon, (who married secondly, Thomas Nugent of Newbridge, now Clonlost,) and died in 1685; by her he had issue a son, Walter, who succeeded his father at Castle Pollard. He served in the army of Charles I., and although attached to the Stuarts at that period, he joined William III., against James II. He represented this county for several years in Parliament.

I find Walter Pollard (and also James Pollard,) appointed a Commissioner for raising supplies in this county for King William III., in the years 1695, 1697, and 1698, and on the magna panela in 1703.

He married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Arthur Dillon,of Lady Hill, in the county of Meath, and erected a vault and monument in the Church of Castle Pollard, which bears the following inscription:-

WALTER POLLARD OF CASTLEPOLLARD ESQVIRE ERECTED THIS MONVMENT FOR THE INTERRINGE OF HIMSELFF AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE THE ONLY DAVGHTER OF ARTHVR DILLON OF LADYHILL IN THE COVNTY OF MEATH ESQVIRE AND OF THOSE OF THE SD WALTER'S NAME AND FAMILY ANODOMINI 1679
