Descendants of James Lamb
1731/41 - 1830



James Lamb was born in Scotland in October, sometime between 1731 and 1735.  He was part of a regiment of Highland Scots under General James Wolfe, who won the battle on the heights of Abraham.  This battle led to the fall of Quebec to the British in June 1759.  It is unknown whether James Lamb returned to Great Britain or stayed in North America, but in the 1770's he was living in NH and was said to be the first permanent settler of New London, NH in 1775.  He entered military service April 23, 1775 under Col. John Stark and may have marched to Bunker Hill.  After 3 months, 16 days he was discharged August 1, 1775.  He again enlisted in February 1777 and served for 3 years.

On February 21, 1784 James Lamb married Judith Austin in New London, NH, daughter of John & Hannah (Nevins) Austin of Methuen, MA.  In 1791 he removed to Sunapee (Wendell), NH.  He was placed on the pension rolls July 17, 1820 and died February 16, 1830.  Judith (Austin) Lamb died in 1849 and is buried in Ironville Cemetery in Crown Point, NY.

2. David, born about 1787 in New London, NH.  He first appeared in the town inventory of Wendell, NH in 1808; 1818 was the last year he was listed.
3. Thomas, born about 1788 in New London, NH and died June 14, 1871 in Concord, OH.  He married Sally Rogers April 5, 1816 in Wendell, NH.
4. William, born about 1791 in New London, NH.  He first appeared in the town inventory of Wendell, NH in 1812; 1819 was the last year he was listed.  He enlisted Feb. 1, 1813 and was discharged Mar. 31, 1813 in Capt. Thomas Currier's Co.  He was promoted to Corporal Feb. 18, 1813.
5. Sarah "Sally", born May 16, 1794 in Wendell, NH and died Oct. 18, 1872 in Underhill, VT.  She married Samuel Pickernell July 4, 1819 in Wendell, NH.
6. Alexander, born April 14, 1796 in Wendell, NH and died in July 1879 in NH.  He m(1) Mary Gould Oct. 6, 1823 and m(2) Sophia Cutting May 2, 1832.
7. Joseph, born May 3, 1799 in Wendell, NH and died July 30, 1883 in NY.  He m(1) Mary Whitney Worcester Aug. 19, 1827; m(2) Lucy abt. 1845.
8. Rachel, born about 1802 in NH and was living with her brother, Joseph, in 1880, unmarried.


Generation 2

3. Thomas Lamb was born about 1788 in New London, NH and was listed in the 1850 census of Concord, OH as being age 67.  He died in Concord, OH while visiting S. Rogers, June 14, 1871, and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Hartford, MI.  He had removed to Michigan sometime after 1850.  He married Sarah Rogers Apr. 5, 1816 in Wendell, NH.  She was born about 1789 and died in 1871 and is, also, buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Hartford, MI.

  9. James Lamb, born Dec. 18, 1820 in Wendell, NH; died Apr. 7, 1911; m. Maria Stalker, Oct. 10, 1841 in Lake Co., OH.
10. Charles R. Lamb, born in 1822/3 in Wendell, NH; died Jan. 2, 1906 in MI; m. Emeline Bartlett, May 25, 1845 in Lake Co., OH.

5. Sarah "Sally" Lamb was born May 16, 1794 in Wendell, NH and died Oct. 18, 1872 in Underhill, VT.  She married Samuel Pickernell July 4, 1819 in Wendell, NH.  They moved to Milton, VT about 1822 where the family name became "Picknell".

12. William Lamb Picknell, born in 1823 in Milton, VT; d. Sept. 28, 1867; m. Ellen Upham, Aug. 29, 1852 in Salem, MA.
13. George W. Picknell, born in 1826 in Milton, VT; d. Dec. 31, 1900 in Colusa Co., CA; m(1) Sapho Merrill, m(2) Emeline Putnam.
14. Maria D. Picknell, born in 1827 in Milton, VT; d. July 26, 1904 in Fairfax, VT; m. Alburn M. Story, Sept. 4, 1880 in Hinesburg, VT.
15. Charles Picknell, born in 1830 in Milton, VT; d. aft 1910 living in VA; m(1) Sarah VanCor; m(2) Ellen VanCor.
16. Adaline C. Picknell, born Oct. 26, 1832 in Milton, VT; d. June 1, 1905 in Hinesburg, VT; m. Stanley Baldwin about 1859.
17. Samuel Picknell, born Oct. 9, 1834 in Milton, VT; d. Mar. 13, 1883 in Colusa Co., CA; m. Catherine Gates May 4, 1869.
18. Walter S. Picknell, born Sept. 1842 in Fairfax, VT; d. Nov. 17, 1878 in Colusa Co., CA; buried with infant son, W.S.P.

6. Alexander Lamb was born in Wendell, NH April 14, 1796 and died in July of 1879 in NH.  He m(1) Mary Gould about Oct. 6, 1823 and m(2) Sophia Cutting of Croyden, NH about May 2, 1832. Sophia was the daughter of Zebulon & Abigail (Bemis) Cutting.

19. Melissa Lamb, born about 1826 in Sullivan Co., NH; age 24, unmarried in 1850.
20. Abigail Lamb, born about 1836 in Sullivan Co., NH; married George Henderson.
21. Amanda Lamb, born about 1841 in Sullivan Co., NH; married James Russell.
22. Margaret A. Lamb, born about 1845 in Sullivan Co., NH.

7. Joseph Lamb was born May 3, 1799 in Wendell, NH and died in Essex Co., NY July 30, 1883.  He was buried in Schroon River Cemetery, Hudson, NY.  He m(1) August 19, 1827 in Newport, NH Mary Whitney Worster, daughter of Jonathan & Mary (Howe) Worcester.  She died December 12, 1842 and is buried in Schroon River Cemetery.  Joseph m(2)  Lucy Bronson who was born about 1808 in NY and died April 6, 1876.

23. Mary Lamb, born about 1829 in NH; living with brother, Joseph, in 1880 unmarried.
24. Jonathan Lamb, born about 1833 in NY. He may be identical with John Lamb who married Cordelia Knox.
25. Ruth Lamb, born about 1839 in Essex Co., NY.
26. Joseph Lamb, born about 1841 in Essex Co., NY; d. April 23, 1894 unmarried and is buried in Schroon River Cemetery.  He served in Co. H, 5th NY Cavalry.
27. Lewis A. Lamb, born about 1851 in Essex Co., NY; d. April 23, 1886; buried in Schroon River Cemetery; m. Mary C. Jenks


Generation 3

10. Charles R. Lamb, born in 1822/3 in Wendell, NH; died Jan. 2, 1906 at his home near Rush Lake, Hartford, Van Buren, MI; m. Emeline Bartlett, May 25, 1845 in Lake Co., OH. Soon after 1850 the family moved to Hartford, Van Buren Co., MI where they lived out their remaining years. Emeline dying in 1894.

Child of Charles and Emeline Lamb:
28. Frank Roger(s) Lamb was born in 1856 in MI probaby Hartford.  He married Helen M. Pierce April 2, 1876 in Covert, Van Buren, MI. Frank died November 26, 1929 and Helen died October 6, 1951.  Both Frank and Helen are buried in Pioneer Cemetery. Their children were: Ray Lamb b. 1878, d. October 8, 1886; Ora Lamb b. 1879, d. October 10, 1886; Clare Lamb b. November 18, 1887, d. Jul 1969; Margaret Lamb b. 1900.
