My Southron Heritage
While the Confederate flag is a symbol of heritage it is also a symbol of state sovereignty. Southron-(1) A Scots adjective and noun for the English and their language; (2) A native or inhabitant of the American South; (3) Anything southern; any southerner. I have a dream that one day we will all walk hand-in-hand as AMERICANS and the culture of all AMERICANS will be remembered and celebrated. To this day the yankees still try to condemn the south for slavery when those same northern states allowed slavery until the north went through an industrial revolution and slaves were no longer needed. They were then sold to the southern states. It was much cheaper and easier to hire poor Irish immigrants for pennies a month than to provide for slaves their entire life. Who shall we blame for slavery? Should we blame Eli Whitney for his invention of the cotton gin that made cotton profitable? Should we blame the northern ship owners who brought them here? Should we blame the people of Africa who sold their own people into slavery? Should we blame Abe Lincoln who freed the slaves in a country that he had no authority to govern while he did not free those in the nation that he did govern? Or should we just simply blame the people of the south, most of which did not own slaves? The importation of slaves from other countries was banned by the Confederate constitution. In 1864, President Jefferson Davis approved a plan that proposed the emancipation of slaves, in return for the official recognition of the Confederacy by Britain and France. In 1865 blacks that joined the Confederate Army were given their freedom. The institution of slavery was on it's way to being abolished in the South. No matter which side won the war slavery would have come to an end. Except for a few large plantation owners, slavery had little to do with the war. The war was fought over constitutional principle, sectional differences, and economics. The purpose of the War Between the States for the Confederate States of America was to maintain their independent and sovereign nation. Everyone seems to have forgotten that over 65,000 Southern blacks were in the Confederate ranks and thousands more provided logistical support for the Confederate military. Horace King, a free black man and former slave, was a contractor to the Confederate Navy. He was also an engineer and became known as the "Bridge builder of the Confederacy." It is impossible to list all the blacks that served their county but I salute them all. I challenge everyone to spend time researching the history of this nation as I have and I believe that the majority will come to the same conclusion that I have which is evidenced in this writing. Enough is Enough! People around the world had their eyes on Mississippi's historic vote. It was covered by reporters and columnists from Los Angeles to London. Mississippians stood firm and made their voices known. The money spent on the election by agitators would have better served the people if it were put toward eradicating poverty in the delta, drug prevention or sickle cell research just to name a few. All that money was wasted when it could have went to the many worthy causes for the people that these groups claimed to represent. We could have worked together to address the problems of today but they chose to divide us. The condition of the economy in our state has nothing to do with our heritage and our flag. Corporations decide to locate in a state because the money is right (ie. cheap land, cheap labor, and tax breaks). What is wrong with our economy is the taxes and welfare imposed on us by the government. Everyone has seen how we are portrayed in the media even when the movie, television show or news report is about modern day. I have yet to see any of those portray the truth about our great South and it's people. I say it is time to turn off the television and leave the newspapers in their stands. This will send a message to the media that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Why is it that only one culture is nationally recognized for a month every year? What is that saying to the Jewish, the Native Americans, the Hispanics, etc? Why don't we take one month a year and celebrate all cultures? If we did this then maybe everyone would get an understanding of one another and develop an appreciation for each other's culture. No, that wouldn't work for the agitators because it might actually bring about peace and harmony and we would have to drop the prefixes and just call ourselves Americans. Why does our heritage represent divisiveness to certain people? Because opponents, including the media, say it does. The NAACP and other agitators want to eradicate all cultures except their own. Schools, streets, buildings, highways, etc are being renamed. Monuments and flags are being taken down. Where will it end? Will we have to take down crosses from our church steeples? Will I be shot because some of my ancestors owned slaves or fought in the War Between the States? If something is not done to stop it, then that is where it will end. Facts for Confederate Heritage Month It Is Time It is time to commit to making a difference in the world our children will inherit. The destruction of our culture must not be permitted. Our children need to be taught the truth about their ancestors. We need to become tireless in our efforts. It is time to take back the Bible Belt. It is time to remember the rights given to us by our ancestors. The right as a citizen of the United States to vote is a very important one that we must exercise. Our government has become a centralized tyranny that no longer supports the will of the people. It is time to find out who your elected officials are and where they stand on the issues that you feel are important. Too many times politicians get elected that do not vote the way the majority of the people they represent would approve of. It is time to remove them from office. Our school boards are not enforcing the laws of this state that require Mississippi state flags to be flown on school grounds. Mississippi law also requires that students be taught the history of the state flag as well as the pledge of allegiance to it. It is time to demand that the laws be enforced. It is time to put and end to the welfare society that expects government to do for them what they should be doing for themselves. It is time to go back to the ways of the Old South where everyone was responsible for themselves and their family. There were no handouts. Mississippi Code § 3-3-15. Display of state flag The state flag may be displayed from all public buildings from sunrise to sunset; however, the state flag may be displayed from all public buildings twenty-four (24) hours a day if properly illuminated. The state flag should not be displayed when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. The state flag shall receive all of the respect and ceremonious etiquette given the American flag. Provided, however, nothing in this section shall be construed so as to affect the precedence given to the flag of the United States of America. (We need to lobby our elected officials to have this changed to read that the state flag MUST be displayed from all public buildings...) § 97-7-39. Flags; desecration of national or state flag prohibited. Any person who, in any manner, for exhibition or display, shall place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing, or any advertisement of any nature, upon any flag, standard, color or ensign of the United States or state flag of the State of Mississippi, or ensign or Confederate flag, or shall expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such flag, standard, color or ensign, upon which shall be attached, appended, affixed or annexed any word, figure, mark, picture, design or drawing, or any advertisement of any nature, or who shall expose to public view, manufacture, sell, expose for sale, give away or have in possession for sale or to give away, or for use for any purpose, any article or substance, being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle of merchandise, or article or things for carrying or transporting merchandise upon which, shall have been printed, painted, attached or otherwise placed, a representation of any such flag, standard, color or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark or distinguish the article or substance, on which so placed, or who shall publicly mutilate, deface, defile or defy, trample upon or cast contempt, either by word or act, upon any such flag, standard, color or ensign, with the intent to desecrate or dishonor such, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be punished by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00), or by imprisonment for not more than thirty (30) days, or both, in the discretion of the court; shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars ($100.00) or by imprisonment for not more than thirty (30) days, or both, in the discretion of the court; and shall also forfeit a penalty in the discretion of the court, of not more than fifty dollars ($50.00) for each such offense, to be recovered with costs in a civil action or suit, in any court having jurisdiction, and such action or suit may be brought by and in the name of any citizen of this state. Such penalty when collected, less the reasonable cost and expense of action or suit, shall be paid into the treasury of this state. Two (2) or more penalties may be sued for and recovered in the same action or suit. The words "flag," "standard," "color," or "ensign," as used in this section, shall include any flag, standard, color, ensign or any picture or representation of either thereof, made of any substance, or represented on any substance, and of any size, evidently purporting to be, either of said flag, standard, color or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either thereof, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars, and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or by which the person seeing the same, without deliberation, may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard or ensign of the United States of America or of the State of Mississippi or Confederate flag. (Why isn't this law being enforced? Why haven't there any arrests in incidents such as those that took place on the Gulf Coast recently?) § 37-13-5. Display of Mississippi and United States flags; course of study The flag of the State of Mississippi and the flag of the United States shall be displayed in close proximity to the school building at all times during the hours of daylight when the school is in session when the weather will permit without damage to the flag. It shall be the duty of the board of trustees of the school district to provide for the flags and their display. In all public schools there shall be given a course of study concerning the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Mississippi and said course of study shall include the history of each flag and what they represent and the proper respect therefor. There shall also be taught in the public schools the duties and obligations of citizenship, patriotism, Americanism and respect for and obedience to law. (As someone that has gone through the Mississippi public school system and as a mother with children currently attending Mississippi public schools, I know that this law is not being carried out in regard to the state flag. I am, however, resigning my children from the public school system and teaching them at home where their school [see first photo] will be complying with the law.) § 37-13-7. Pledges of allegiance to United States and Mississippi flags. (1) The boards of trustees of the public schools of this state shall require the teachers under their control to have all pupils repeat the oath of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America at least once during each school month, such oath of allegiance being as follows: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." (2) The official pledge of the State of Mississippi shall read as follows: "I salute the flag of Mississippi and the sovereign state for which it stands with pride in her history and achievements and with confidence in her future under the guidance of Almighty God." The pledge of allegiance to the Mississippi flag shall be taught in the public schools of this state, along with the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag.
