Introduction

I don't remember the exact date that my father gave me the pages that I used to compile this history. I estimate it was about 1963/1964. I put it away and more or less forgot about it.

I have moved many times in the years since then, but I always moved these pages with me. He seemed to want me to have this record of his work history and residences. He had to list these things for a job he was applying for.

In March 2006, I had an inspiration to transcribe this information for my descendants, and his, to have in the future. He has been gone for 5 years, but he is alive in my memory, and I still expect any day to get a phone call from him, just like in the old days. Maybe the inspiration to do this is in place of that phone call, stranger things than that have happened to me since I became a genealogist. I truly believe it is a spiritual calling.

Some of the text is almost impossible to read, so I have transcribed it to the best of my ability. Others may be better able to interpret the writing, but they are not here, so you are left with my feeble attempt.

I know that some places have been left out of the places we lived in the early years, but he was trying to remember 30 years of residences, and I can certainly understand. There were sometimes reasons to forget places because of unpleasant memories. I appreciate the fact that he shared this with me. It was the best he could do at the time, so errors are certainly forgiven. I would have to concentrate very hard to remember all the places and addresses I have lived at in the last 30-40 years, so I find it a remarkable work on his part.

This is dedicated to you, Dad. Rest in peace.

I am proud to be your daughter.

Author's note: I am not aware of what work my dad did prior to January 1941. I do know that my maternal grandparents, Ralph and Hazel Cary financed his training to become a welder. This probably took place in 1940, and the Burlington, Iowa job was probably his first after completing that training.
