a copy of a document called the GRIFFITH'S VALUATION
obtained in a place called Ballybay Co Monaghan, from an ex draper, in the summer
of 1996, we discovered that the Meegan family lived in a Town Land called CARGAGHDOO
pronounced Cargaduff to the locals.

Still living in Carghaghdoo
in 1996 are :-
Peter Meegan 82 yrs old (
see photograph outside his home in the middle of making a fire ) , and a
Patrick Meegan who was working
on a barn near the larger two storeyed house nearby.
Francis Meegan also lives
next to Peter but we did not see him - only his dog.

A certificate which
we happen
to possess from an enquiry to Newry County Council in County Armagh ( because
of the Newry plaque ) who had no knowledge of a marriage of an Owen Meegan
to a
Mary
Daly - which ultimately led to an enquiry in the Belfast Record Office for James
Meegan's Birth Certificate. They suggested following up on a James Meegan born
in Castleblayney in Eire. Result as follows :-

around this time - Was James Daly a brother in law to Owen? and the Meegans and the
Walshes lived very close together in Carghaghdoo Co Monaghan -
Could this be a marriage linking
all three families ?

The Burke Connection
This suggests that there may be connection between the Burke and Meegan families - Here are some records from the Archives which appear to verify a link despite the variation in the spelling of Meegan.

Witnesses were Patrick Reilly and Mary Mehagan.
I was told that Hugo in the Latin form - is the equivalent of the name Owen - so the plot thickens. However if John is here in Middlesbrough at this time -he is here before Owen arrives in West Hartlepool in 1874 but you will notice that John and Kate are living in West Hartlepool in 1879 according to the next birth - so perhaps John and Kate moved there soon after their marriage and invited Owen over.
We need some records to confirm this - but at the time of the 1881 census - Owen has moved to Mbro- North Ormesby and in 1871 ?? Who knows? See Records.
