Welcome To Our Oxlade Family History

"Dwellers in the Valley of the Oaks"

Welcome to the Oxlade Family History site. This site is an extension of my Oxlade One Name Study and replaces the book that I had planned to write. I wanted to share all the Oxlade information that I had discovered or had passed on to me by so many kind people. As people from various branches of the Clan have been told that all Oxlades are related, it is possible that this is so. The name is thought to be of Anglo Saxon origin and to mean "Dwellers in the Valley of the Oaks. " The valley could be anywhere in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Oxfordshire, however, Ackhampstead, about three quarters of a mile from Lane End, which also has a long Oxlade association, is a real possibility.

Achamstede is an Olde English word meaning Oak Homestead and there was a Chapel on the site for at least 800 years. Due to a dwindling Congregation, the Chapel was taken down around 1847 and rebuilt at Cadmore End. A small copse of trees has grown over the remains of the flint walls and the only visible reminder is a small wooden Cross with the name Ackhampstead on it.

I hope that the information contained on this site is useful to other Oxlade researchers, though it is important to remember to check for corrections and updates. As new records come to hand things can change quite markedly. If re-using anything from this site please acknowledge the sources and if possible check the originals yourself.

If you would like more information or to join in discussion of our Oxlade research, you may like to join the associated Oxlade Family History Group Online. The List provides a friendly forum for the collection and exchange of information on the Oxlade Clan and new researchers are welcome. There are over forty members and subscription is free.
