John Smith Woodward was the second child and first son of William and Nancy Smith Woodward of Tennessee and Indiana. He married (1) Elizabeth J. Cook and (2) Lovey Jariah Craven.

Elizabeth J. Cook was the daughter of Jesse and Hannah Marshall Cook of North Carolina and Indiana. John & Elizabeth were married 10/30/1856 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Elizabeth Cook Woodward died 1/5/1858 in Hendricks County, Indiana, likely in childbirth. Apparently the child did not survive.

John Smith Woodward History

Much of the information we have on this family comes from an article "Seedtime and Harvest on Woodward Hill," Hendricks County History Bulletin, Vol XVI, No. II (Danville, Indiana, The Hendricks County Historical Society, May 1985). The article was written by Ruth Mitchell Pritchard Much of the material came from a diary of John Smith Woodward then in possession of Marcia Alice Woodward Cooper, a granddaughter of John Smith Woodward. Marcia Cooper is deceased and the diary is now owned by Keith Devon Cooper. Marcia Cooper was grandmother of Rosann Settles who contributed information on this family.

We have fleshed out the information from census records in Hendricks County, Indiana; particularly the 1900 census which gives month and year of birth and number of children born and living. This is not necessarily accurate, depending on who furnished the information. For example, Lovey Woodward is censused twice, once with son Alvin and once with husband John. With Alvin the birthdate is given as July 1840 and with John as November 1839.

The eighty-acre parcel of land in Liberty Township of Hendricks County, once known as "Woodward Hill" was in the Woodward family for more than a century. Woodward Hill is that elevation on the east side of county road 275 East between county roads 600 and 700 south. From this prominence a sweeping view can be had of surrounding terrain, sometimes also a view of the watertank towner in Moorseville about ten miles away. The 80 acre tract of land was sold to Levi Cook on 9/27/1824, then to Jesse Cook father of Elizabeth Cook on August 23, 1826. It then passed into the hands of William Woodward and finally to John Smith Woodward in 1860.

John Smith Woodward was an apiarist and sold rights to make and use a patented beehive. It was called the Hicks beehive and sold for five dollars and buyers listed were mostly in the 1870s. The tradition was carried on by great grandson Keith Devon Cooper. Other descendants also kept bees.

Some of the interesting notations from John S. Woodward's diary:
October 8 and 9, 1871: the greatest fire in Chicago ever known.

"Father's will was rote Nov. 20, 1883"

"January 5th (1884 or 1885) mercury at 26 degrees below zero."

"June 11, 1885: Locust year."

"July 1885: Largest streams ever known wheat washed out of fields corn down crops ruined in general railroad bridge washed out at the 'Burg (Cartersburg)."

"Father deceased June 27, 1887 and was born September 13, 1803."

"Elizabeth J. Cook's birthday is 28th day of 8th month 1839. John S. Woodwards birthday January 21st 1836."

"Aunt Jane (Woodward) Hinshaw was born February 14, 1797"

"October 7, 1881: Uncle Bennie Woodward departed this life and was intered at White Lick next day the 8th of October 1881."

"January 1, 1882: Aunt Jane Hinshaw departed this life at the age of 83 years 20 months and 17 days. Uncle Ezra died just seven years and two months ago."

There are many, many notations in the diary of the deaths of friends, neighbors, and relatives.

More on the Children of John Smith and Lovey Craven Woodward

Amanda, Emma, Anna, and Abigail Woodward

Three of these daughters apparently never married and are found as single in various census records. Daughter Amanda may not have married until late in life. She is found in 1920 in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana: #406 John Harrison, own home, 62, born In, parents born In; janitor at school; Mandy, 59, born In, parents born Indiana. We could not however find either her or John for sure in previous census records, nor could we find a marriage record so they may have married late in life.

Reece and Anna Rushton

Reece Woodward and Anna Rushton were married September 5, 1888 in Hendricks County, Indiana. They are found in the 1900 census in Liberty Township:#147 Reese Woodward, born (unreadable month) 1864, married 12 years, farmer; Annie, born Feb 1865, 34, married 12 years, 1 child born, 1 living; Bessie Woodward, daughter, born August 1889, age 10, in school.

Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Allison Woodward

Benjamin Woodward married Mary Elizabeth Allison 14 Mar 1894 in Hendricks County, Indiana. They are found in the 1990 census in Liberty Township next to John and Lovey Woodward: #200 Benjamin Woodward, born Jan 1867, married 6 yr, 33, In, parents born In, farmer; Lizzie, born March 1871, 29, In, Ky, NC; 2 children born, 2 living; Edith, born April 1897, In, In, In; Leland, born Oct 1898, In, In, In.

Alvin Woodward

Alvin Woodward married Fannie Hammond 4 Mar 1896 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Fannie died December 1899 at the birth of daughter Fara. Alvin is found in the 1900 census in Liberty Township: #99 Alvin Woodward, born June 1870, In, parents born In; Fara, daughter, born Dec 1889 (actually 1899 as it gives her age as 6/12), In, parents born In; Lovey Woodward, mother, born July 1840, 8 children born, 8 living, born In, parents NC; Emma, sister, born Oct 1862, In, parents born In. Lovey was also censused at home with husband John Smith Woodward so was probably temporarily with Alvin and helping to care for the baby.

Alvin Woodward married again on 5 October 1904 to Sara Bosley in Marion County, Indiana (next door to Hendricks Co). Daughter Fara remained with Lovey and Emma Woodward and is found with them in the 1910 census. Alvin and Sara are found in Liberty, Hendricks County, Indiana in 1910: #9 Alvin Woodward, 34, marriage 2, 5 yr, In, In, In, salesman, grocery store; Sarah R., 27, marriage 1, 5 yr, 2 children born, 2 living, born Ky, parents born Ky; Donald B., 4, In, In, Ky; Louis A., 2, In, In, Ky. They owned a home in Clayton, Hendricks County in 1920 and had an additional son, Lynn, age 7 in 1920. Alvins age was correctly shown as 49 in the 1920 census. It would be interesting to know more about Sara. She is found as Sallie R. Bosley, born Nov 1882, at school, in Indianapolis in 1900. Her parents are Thomas J. and Emma Bosley and Thomas was a postal clerk. Sallie has a sister Hettie who is listed as a reporter for the Indianapolis News.

Ervin and Flora Townsend Woodward

Ervin Woodward married Flora M. Townsend 29 October 1902 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Ervin and Flora are found next door to Lovie Woodward and her daughters Emma and Abbie, and granddaughter Fara in 1910. None of the women had an occupation so Ervin was probably helping support the family. Since Fara was Alvins daughter, he probably helped as well. John Smith Woodwards sister Sarah Jane Woodward and husband John M. Cook, were also farming on the other side of Lovies residence so Lovie had plenty of help and support. In 1920: #214 Ervin C. Woodward, 30, married 8 years, born In, parents born In, farmer, Flora, wife, 30, married 8 years, In, parents born Indiana.

In 1920 Ervin and Flora still lived next to Lovey and her daughters. Ervin and Flora had added a daughter, Marcia Alice, age 9, to their family.
