History of Jesse and Rhoda Morgan WoodwardJesse Woodward went to Hendricks County, Indiana, on a certificate with his mother and stepfather and stepsister, Barachiah & Elizabeth Millikan Woodward Macy and Lydia Macy on September 27, 1828. We know from the manuscript written by Benjamin's son and Jesse's nephew Riley D. Woodward, that Benjamin & Jesse went to Indiana and then went back to Tennessee and were married and then brought their brides to Indiana. Lost Creek Monthly Meeting records the removal of the two women to Indiana on 10/27/1832. However there were problems with the Indiana meetings because of their marriage contrary to discipline. Springfield MM reported on 6/20/1835 that Jesse Woodward had married contrary to discipline. On 3/19/1836 he was granted a certificate to White Lick Monthly Meeting and he had been reported married contrary to discipline there on 1/13/1836. Rhoda & Jesse eventually made their peace with the Quakers and their children are recorded at Sugar Grove Monthly Meeting (about 1 1/2 miles south of Plainfield in Hendricks County, Indiana) and they are both buried at Sugar Grove. Jesse & Rhoda's children actually complied with the Quaker faith longer than almost any of the other Woodward children.Their son, Miles Woodward, married Louisa J. Newlin and many of their children continued on in the faith; their daughter Gladys Woodward Parrial being buried at Sugar Grove in 1941. (more below).Jesse Woodward bought land in Hendricks County, Indiana, on 9/3/1835. He farmed this land until his death and left it to his children (see will below). More on the children of Jesse and Rhoda Morgan WoodwardHuldah, Ruth, and William Morgan WoodwardThese three children never married. Huldah and Ruth are mentioned in Jesse�s will below. Son William Morgan Woodward died unmarried 7/7/1871 in Hendricks County and is buried at Sugar Grove MM as are his sisters, so these children all remained in the Quaker faith. William Woodward was a school teacher, living at home, age 34 in the 1870 census in Guilford Township, Hendricks County. Sisters Hulda, 36, and Ruth, 20, were also at home.Mary Elizabeth Woodward HadleyDaughter Mary Elizabeth was at home, Elizabeth, age 18, in the 1860 census in Guilford Township, Hendricks County (note there are serious problems with ages of the children in this census). She married as second wife to Moses Hadley at Sugar Grove Monthly Meeting 5/10/1866 and they are living three doors from Jesse and Rhoda in 1870. The only children with them are Zilpha, 17; Brazelton, 12?, and Marion (male), 9, so they were Mary�s stepchildren. We do not know if Mary had children with Moses as we do not find either of them in the 1880 census. Brazelton Hadley signed as a witness on Jesse Woodward�s will in 1888. Jesse left land to Mary E. Hadley. According to John Smith Woodward�s diary Mary Elizabeth died 30 May 1893 in Hendricks County, Indiana. He was her first cousin.Millikan/Millican WoodwardWe did not find a lot of information about Millikan Woodward. There is a "Matilda", male age 15, in the (very bad) 1860 census with Jesse and Rhoda and it is likely him. Curiously there is an M. Woodward, farmer, age 32 in Keokuk County, Iowa in 1870, married to a Margaret, age 26, and with no children. This is of some interest as Rhoda Morgan Woodward�s mother wrote her will in Keokuk County, Iowa in 1856 and the age is right. We did however find a marriage record in Morgan County, Indiana 7 June 1893 to Sarah J. Latta, daughter of James C. and Mary A. Latta of North Carolina and Indiana.We did not otherwise find him in the census records until 1910 when he is living near sister Hulda in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana with wife Sarah J.:#8 South Centre Street (west side), Millican Woodward, 72, married 16 yr, born In, parents born Tn; Sarah J., wife, 54, married 16 yrs, In, parents born NC. They were there also in 1900 which verified Millican as born Nov 1837 and Hulda born May 1833. Millican and Sarah J.Woodward apparently had no children. Millican died 24 March 1914 in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana. His widow married Millican's cousin Riley Dixon Woodward 23 September 1918 in Hencricks County. Milton and Eleanor Baldwin WoodwardSon Milton Woodward married Eleanor Baldwin, daughter of Ahira and Jane Newby Baldwin, 5 September 1866 in Hendricks County, Indiana. They had a daughter Clara Malinda born 25 July 1867 in Indiana and then moved to Tonganoxie, Leavenworth, Kansas, before the birth of daughter Mary E. Woodward in September 1869 in Kansas. They had additional children: Marion (male) born July 1871, Kansas; Charles B., b about 1874, Ks; Pearlie Woodward (son) born about 1878 in Kansas, and daughter Rhoda Woodward, born August 1884 in Kansas. The 1900 census in Kansas gives them as married 33 years and Eleanor with six children born, five living so either Mary Elizabeth or Pearlie was deceased at that time.Miles and Louisa Newlin WoodwardSon Miles Woodward married third cousin, Louisa J. Newlin, daughter of David and Asenath Blair Newlin, on 1 April 1875 in Hendricks County, Indiana.They had children: Fairy Belle Woodward (b 28 Mar 1876, married Nixon Rush); Floy Olella Woodward (b 12 Apr 1879, m. John W. Stanley); Kate (b. 9 Apr 1881, m. Ralph Douglas); Virly (b 22 Oct 1882, d 26 Jan 1883); Gladys (b 25 Nov 1889 m Cyril Parrial); Guy (b. 5 Feb 1892 m Mary Eva Hall). This family also went briefly to Kansas as children Gladys and Guy were born in Kansas. On 1 December 1897 the family received a certificate from Haviland MM, Kansas to Plainfield MM in Hendricks County, Indiana. They are found in the 1900 census in Guilford Township, Hendricks County, Indiana: #148 Miles Woodward, born May 1846, 54, married 25 yr, In, Tn, Tn; Louisa J, b Jan 1856, 44, married 25 yr 6 children born, 5 living; Fairy B, b Mar 1876, 24, In, In, In; Floy O, April 1870, In, In, In; Kate, Apr 1881, In, In, In; Gladys D, Nov 1890 Ks, In, In; Guy, Feb 1892, Ks, In, In. WillsLydia Morgan's willRhoda's mother Lydia Morgan wrote her will in Keokuk County, Iowa, 4th day 3rd month, 1854. She signed with her mark and the will was witnessed by Perry Mills, William Smith, and Olid C. Thornburg. She left ten dollars to daughter Rhoda & son-in-law Jesse Woodward.Jesse Woodward's WillKnow all men by these presents that I Jesse Woodward of the County of Hendricks, State of Indiana, do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows towit: First that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid out of the money on hand or owing at the time of my death but if this should not be sufficient for the payment of my debts it is my will that the livestock on hand at that time or such part thereof as may be necessary be sold and the proceeds be applied thereto. Second. I give to my daughters Huldah Woodward and Ruth Woodward jointly and in equal interest the following described tract of land situated in Hendricks County, Indiana, towit: the West half (1/2) of the South East Quarter (1/4)of Section 15 Town 14 Range 1 East containing eighty acres together with all the household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils on hand at the time of my death. Also such provisions for the family as may be on hand at the time to an amount sufficient for one years supply. Third, I give to my daughter Mary Elizabeth Hadley the following described tract of land situated in Hendricks County, Indiana, towit: the SouthWest quarter of the Southeast of Section 10 Town 14 Range 1 East containing (missing). Milton Woodward and Miles Woodward jointly and in equal interest the following described land situated in Hendricks County, Indiana, towit: North half of SouthWest of Section 10 Town 14 Range 1 East containing eighty acres, together with all the money on hand and owing at the time of my death and all the livestock on hand at that time excepting such part thereof as may be necessary to satisfy the provisions set forth in the first clause of this my will.
