Return to Thomas Thornbrough IV page

Thomas Thornbrough V was son of Thomas Thornbrough IV and Miriam Winslow Thornbrough of Rowan and Randolph Counties, North Carolina. He is recorded as their son in Back Creek Monthly Meeting Records "Thomas Thornbrough, born 10/16/1794." Thomas married (1) Disey Wood and (2) Sarah Henley.

Disey Wood was daughter of Penuel Wood, Sr. and Sarah Kimball Wood. Her name was probably Disa or Diza Wood and Dicey or Disey was probably a nickname. William Wood who died in Randolph County in 1804 was her grandfather and also had a daughter Disey (married Whitlock Arnold) so this Disey was no doubt named for her aunt. (We thank Robert Wood for furnishing us information on Disey's parentage.)

Sarah Henley was daughter of Joseph and Peninah Morgan Henley of Randolph County, North Carolina. The Henleys were Quakers and members of Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Randolph County. Their children are listed at Back Creek MM (Sarah, Susanna, Thomas, Henry, Lucretia, Mary, Nancy Anne, Charles, Micajah, Jesse, Robert.) They moved to Rush County, Indiana, in 1837 per a history of Rush County.

  Thomas Thornbrough
born 10/16/1794 Randolph Co, NC
died 11/1836 Randolph Co, NC
Disa(Disey) Wood
born Randolph Co, NC
died 1818 Randolph Co, NC

Married: Between November 1, 1815 (bond date) and 1/27/1816, in Randolph County, North Carolina. Thomas Thornbrugh was reported married out of unity (married a non-Quaker) at Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Randolph County on 1/27/1816 so the marriage occurred before that date.

Children:
Winslow Thornbrough born about 1818, Randolph County, North Carolina; married Landy Andrews
Sarah Thornbrough born about 1818, Randolph County, North Carolina; married William Stafford
(These birthdates are from census records and may be erroneous, so we do not necessarily think that Winslow and Sarah were twins although twins did run in the family. We have two consistent census records for Winslow, but only one for Sarah).

Thomas Makes Peace with the Quakers

Thomas Thornbrough evidently wanted his children raised as Quakers as on 10/29/1823, at Back Creek Monthly Meeting, Randolph County, Winslow and Sarah Thornbrugh were received at request of their father, Thomas Thornbrugh. He himself had apparently made his peace as his second marriage took place at Back Creek Monthly Meeting.

died 11/1836 Randolph Co, NC
Sarah Henley

Married: 2/12/1819 at Back Creek Monthly Meeting. "Thomas Thornburgh, son Thomas and Marium, deceased, Randolph County, married Sarah Henley."

Thomas H. Thornbrough born 5/20/1837 Rush County, In; died 10/18/1838 and buried at Walnut Ridge MM in Rush Co, In. So ends the series of Thomas Thornbroughs. This Thomas was born after the death of his father.

Death of Thomas Thornbrough in Randolph County

Thomas Thornbrough died intestate in Randolph County, North Carolina. It was probably an accident or sudden illness since there was no will and he died so young. A petition for dower was filed in the court in Randolph County in the February term of 1837. It stated that Thomas Thornbrough departed this life in the month of November last, being seized at the time of his death of two tracts of land in the County of Randolph on the waters of Uharie. An amended writ of dower mentions one tract of 100 acres lying on Hannahs Creek adjoining Jacob Lasseter, Orrick, and Bundy. The dower petition is styled "Sarah Thornbrough vs. Stafford and his wife, Phebe, Betsey, Disey, Perenina, Mariam, Amanda, Lucinda, and Mary Thornbrough, minor heirs of Thomas Thornbrough, deceased." Aaron Hill (husband of Thomas's sister Miriam) was guardian of the minor children. Aaron Hill was also involved in the estate of Thomas's father as three inventories of his estate are among documents in Randolph County, though his will was written in Guilford County.

In March 1837 a year's support was allotted from Thomas Thornbrough's estate for Sarah and ten children. At that time Sarah had care of the children, and was pregnant with son Thomas. Dicey's children Winslow and Sarah were already married but Sarah was not yet 21. A settlement is shown as late as February 1855 with Aaron Hill, guardian of Luzena and Amanda Thornburg. This information was kindly furnished to us by Carol Vidales (She has abstracted Randolph County wills and administrations for several years for publication in the Randolph County Journal - the Thornbrough Estate is in Vol X No 2, Spring 1986).

The Move to Indiana

On 3/29/1837, probably just after receiving her year's support allotment, Sarah requested a certificate for herself and children to Walnut Ridge Monthly Meeting, Rush County, Indiana. We do not know who accompanied her although we can guess it was probably members of the Hill family and/or the Henley family as both are found in Rush County in 1850. It is from the records of Walnut Ridge Monthly Meeting in Rush County that we have the list of children of Thomas and Sarah Henley Thornbrough.

In 1840 Sarah is found in Ripley Township in Rush County, Indiana: Sarah Thornburg, 3 females age 5-10, 3 females age 15-20, 1 female 40-50. This would not account for all the children so some may have been working out and listed with other families. In 1850 Ripley Township: #700 Sarah Thornburg, 49, NC; Elizabeth, 28, NC; Dicy, 26, NC; Amanda, 20, NC; Luzena, 18, NC, Mary, 16, NC. Next door are her parents: #701 Joseph Henley, 82, farmer, NC; Penina, 71, NC; Mary, 28, NC; Mariam Thornburg, 23, NC; Robert Henley, 27, NC; James Griffin, 17, NC.

Winslow and Landy Andrews Thornbrough

Winslow Thornbrough was dismissed 9/24/1834 from Back Creek Monthly Meeting for his marriage out of unity to Landy Andrews. Winslow and Landy are found in Randolph County, North Carolina, in the 1850 census: Winslow Thornsburg (sic), 32, farmer; Landa, 32; Harris W., 13; Martha, 9; Diza, 8; Margaret, 5; Josiah, 2. In the 1860 census they have added children: Christine, 7; Eliza, 3; William, 1. We did not find them in 1870 but in 1880 they are in New Hope Township, Randolph county, North Carolina: Dwelling #3, family #2 Winslow Thornburg, 62, farmer, plantation, born NC, parents born NC; Lunda, 62, NC, parents born NC; family #5 Joseph Thornburg, farmer, 30, born NC, parents born NC; Eliza Jane, 30, NC, parents NC; Thos Hill Thornburg, son, 11, NC; Wm Penn Thornburg, 9, son, NC; Numa Reed Thornburg, 7, son, NC; Jesse H. Thornburg, 5, son, NC; Cintha Ann Thornburg, 2, daughter,NC; Arthur W. Thornburg, 6/12, NC; Addison Jackson (white), 20, servant, born NC, parents NC; Luther Franklin (white), 18, servant, born NC, parents NC. Since he is living in the same household we would guess that this is Winslow's son who is given as Josiah in the other census records.

Son Harrison W. Thornbrough, born 6/24/1835, married Emily Bowen on 25 December 1859 in Rush County, Indiana. Harrison W. Thornbrough, son of Winslow and Landy Thornbrough, was received in membership at Walnut Ridge Monthly Meeting in Rush County, Indiana, on 7/21/1877. They are found in 1880 in Ripley Township, Rush County, Indiana: Harris Thornburg, 44, carpenter, born NC, parents born NC; Emily, 45, born In, father born Md, mother born Va; Claudius, 19, farm laborer, born In; William, 15, In; Theodocia, 12, In; Carrie, 8, In; Landy A., 5, In; Jesse, 2, In; Julia 4/12 (Feb), In. Harrison was dismissed from Walnut Ridge meeting for divorcing Emily Bowen on 12/18/1895.

Sarah Thornbrough Stafford

Marlene Ross is descended from William and Sarah Thornbrough Stafford and much of the information on the Staffords is from her research.

Sarah Thornbrough married William Stafford about 2/26/1836 (bond date) in Randolph County, North Carolina. They are mentioned in the dower petition in 1837 as Sarah was still a minor. William and Sarah are found next to Winslow and Landy in the 1840 census. At that time they have a daughter and a son under 5. The daughter apparently died before the 1850 census. We have some difficulty with the children of William and Sarah as found in various census records, both as to names and ages, so take the information with a grain of salt.

William and Sarah Thornbrough Stafford are found in Spartansburg, South Carolina, in the 1850 census: William Stafford, 34, born NC, coach maker; Sarah, 32, born NC; James M, 13, NC; William H., 7, NC; John A., NC, 7; Jackson M., 5, NC; Sarah, 3, NC. James M. is given as Julius in other records. In the 1860 census we find the family in Lenois District, Caldwell County, North Carolina: William Stafford, 46, cabinet maker, NC; Sarah, 42, NC; Julius, 23, NC; Mary (wife of Julius), NC; Sarah, 20, NC; William, 18, NC; Albert, 15, NC; John, 13, NC; Jane, 10, NC; Edward, 4, NC; Emma, 2, NC. We were unable to find William and Sarah and family at all in the 1870 census. In 1880 they are in Mitchell County, North Carolina, Bakersville Township: William Stafford, 56, house painter, NC; Sarah, 63, NC; Jane, 23, NC; Edward, 21, NC; Emma, 20, NC; Jefferson, 18, NC.

Sarah Thornbrough Stafford died sometime between 1880 and 1900 and we find William still in Bakersville Township, Mitchell Co, NC: James Carraway, 33, Aug 1866, NC, parents NC; Lucy, 32, Dec 1865, NC, parents NC, 1 child born, none living; William Stafford, father-in-law, 87, Aug 1812, widower, NC, parents born NC. Apparently Lucy was Lucy Stafford born after the 1860 census.

Son William Henry Stafford married Martha Walker, daughter of William and Mary Walker of Tennessee, on 1/20/1869 in Washington County, Tennessee. In his Soldier's Application for Pension William Henry Stafford states that he enlisted in Caldwell Co, NC in 1862. He states he was born in Randolph Co, NC Sept 20th 1843 and moved to Tennessee in 1868. His parents are given on his death certificate as William Stafford and Sarah Thornburg. In 1870 in District 17, Washington Co, Tn William and Martha are given as living with her parents: William Walker, 68, farmer, born Tn; Mary, 57, Tn; Margaret, 24, Tn; Elbert Keys, 26, works on farm, Tn; Sarah, 26, Tn; Mary, 2, Tn; Wm A, 1.12(May), Tn; Henry Stafford, 24, works on farm, born NC; Martha, 24, Tn; Wm E 6/12 (Nov), Tn.

Son John Stafford married Susan Stark and they are found in 1870 in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell Co, NC; John Stafford, 27, farmer, NC; Susan, 25, NC. Wife Susan was deceased by 1900 as John Stafford is found in 1900 still in Grassy Creek Township: John Stafford, Jan 1848, 52, widower, NC, parents born NC; Lida, daughter, Feb 1881, NC; Julius, Nov 1883; NC; Esther, Dec 1884, NC; John, Oct 1886, NC.

Luzena and Elizabeth Thornbrough

Luzena and Elizabeth Thornburg never married and are found together as public school teachers in Carthage Town in Rush County, Indiana in 1900. Their respective birthdates of January 1833 and September 1822 are verified and Luzena is head of household.

Diza Thornbrough Butler

Diza Butler is found in 1880 in District 16, Dudley, Henry County, Indiana in 1880 (Henry County is directly north of Rush County.) #67 Diza Butler, 55, born NC, parents born NC; Barton L. Butler, 21, farmer, born In, father In, mother NC; Mary L. Butler, 16, In, In, NC; Christopher Butler, 12, In, In, NC. Researchers have given her husband's name as Joshua Butler but we have been unable to locate a marriage record or a census record other than the 1880 record above. The age fits Diza's October 1824 birth date and place and the name is unusual enough that it has to be her.

Miriam Thornbrough Lacy

Miriam Thornbrough is living with her grandparents, Joseph and Penina Henley, in Ripley, Rush County, Indiana, and next door to her mother, Sarah Henley Thornbrough in 1850. Miriam Thornburg married Thomas Lacy on 13 October 1853 in Rush County, Indiana. Thomas was born about 1824 in Indiana according to the 1850 census where he is living with his brother Jesse Lacy in Ripley Township. There is a Thomas and Mary Lacy in Ripley Township, Rush County in 1860: Thomas Lacy, 36, farmer, born Indiana; Mary, 32, born Indiana; Elizabeth Nesbitt, 23, In. The age of Mary matches that of Miriam, born 9/14/1828, but it may not be her. Her name is sometimes seen as Mariam so she may have gone by Mary. We find nothing further on Thomas or Mary Lacy.

Phebe Thornbrough Hill

Phebe Thornburg married Elwood or Edward Hill on 10/14/1840 in Rush County, Indiana. the marriage record transcription is Elwood and the 1850 census is Edward. They are found in Ripley, Rush County, Indiana in 1850: #665 Edward Hill, 29, miller, Ind; Phebe, 27, NC; Mary J., 9, In; Sarah A., 9, In; Jesse, 6, In; Robert, 4, In; Emma, 2, In; Isaac Hill, 24, teamster, In. In 1860: #234 Edward Hill, 42, laborer, In; Phebe, 40, NC; Robert, 14, In; Emma, 12, In; Lucretia, 8, In.

Peninah Thornbrough Hill

Peninah Thornburgh married Amos H. Hill 11/22/1848 at Walnut Ridge Monthly Meeting, Rush County. This date is also included in the Indiana Marriage Index. They are found in Ripley Township, Rush County in 1850: #678 Amos H. Hill, 33, blacksmith, In; Penina, 22, NC; William L. Hill, 21, blacksmith, In. The Hill name is too common in Rush County to determine the parentage of either Edward or Amos Hill.

Amanda Thornbrough Walton

Amanda Thornburg married Jesse Walton 19 September 1862 in Rush County. We could find no further information on Amanda or Jesse.

Mary Thornbrough Rule

Mary Thornburgh married Lewis G. Rule January 1, 1857 in Rush County. In 1860 they are found in Ripley Township: #99 Lewis Rule, 27, no occupation given, born Va; Mary, 25, NC; Jesse W., 2, In. #100 John Rule, 25, no occupation, born Va; Paulina, 27, In (probably brother) and #101 Jesse Henley, 41, farmer, born NC with a big family. This is Mary's uncle and hence the naming of their child Jesse. Probably the Rule brothers actually worked on his farm. In 1880 Lewis and Mary are found in Blue River Township, Hancock, Indiana: #91 Louis G. Rule, 46, lumberman, Va, parents born Virginia; Mary, 44, NC, parents born NC; Jesse W., 22, works in saw mill, In; Sarah E., 14, In; Robert Collins, 7, nephew, In, parents born In; Thomas Jessup, 21, boarder, works in sawmill, In, parents born Indiana. Several neighbors are listed with various chills and fever, at least one called typhoid fever, so illness was evidently making the rounds. The family was spared however as they are still in Blue River Township in Hancock County, Indiana, in 1900 owning a farm. Daughter [Sarah] Elli is still at home, born April 1866; Lewis born Sept 1832; Mary born February 1835, 2 children born, 2 living.

Son Jesse is in 1st Civil District, Lake County, Tennessee: #131 Jesse W. Rule, Aug 1854, 45, married 18 years, born In, father Va, mother In, works for lumber company; America July 1863, 5 chil born 4 liv, In, parents born unknown; Rolla, Oct 1883, In, 16, scales logs; Orin April 1885, 15, In; Eva, Aug 1887, 12, In; Carrie, Oct 1888, 11, In. Jesse Rule married America E. Glascock, daughter of John and Sarah A. Glasscock,on 21 December 1882 in Hancock County. America's father was born Virginia, his parents Virginia, and her mother was born Ky, mother's father Va, and mother Ky.
