Thomas Thornbrough IV was the son of Thomas and Ruth Hunt Thornbrough of Rowan (later Guilford) County, North Carolina. He married (1) Miriam Winslow and (2) Phebe Stanley.

Miriam Winslow was daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Phelps Winslow of Pasquotank County and Randolph County, North Carolina.

Phebe Stanley was daughter of William and Elizabeth Stanley. Thomas and Phebe were married at New Garden Monthly Meeting on 12/30/1804. Thomas was granted a certificate from Back Creek MM in Randolph County to New Garden to marry and Phebe was granted a certificate to Back Creek Monthly Meeting from New Garden dated 3/30/1805. As nearly as we can determine there was no issue of this marriage. Phebe's death was reported on 2/25/1846 at Back Creek MM.

North Carolina Records

Thomas and Miriam Thornbrough were charter members of Back Creek Monthly Meeting in Randolph County, North Carolina when it was set off from Centre Monthly Meeting 12/29/1792. Centre Monthly Meeting was just across the county line in Guilford County and Thomas and Miriam probably lived all along in Randolph County and were thus transferred to Back Creek Monthly Meeting when it was formed.

Thomas Thornbrough's death is recorded at Back Creek Monthly Meeting but Miriam's record is missing, so we do not know the date of her death. It was Quaker custom to wait at least a year after a death before remarriage so she probably died in 1803 or early in 1804. From the sequence of children's births above she may have died in childbirth.

Thomas Thornbrough's estate papers appear to be among loose papers in the North Carolina State Archives (Guilford Genealogist, Spring 1991). Part of the estate papers are found in Randolph County intermixed with papers from his son Thomas V's estate. Both estates were handled by Aaron Hill and some inventories from Thomas IV's estate were filed there.

We do not have further information on Thomas Thornbrough's son Winslow. We notice in some Thornbrough genealogies he is mixed up with Winslow Thornbrough who married Landy Andrews, and is son of Thomas V, and grandson of Thomas IV.
