Quaker Records

New Garden Monthly Meeting records give conflicting dates of birth for Joseph Thornbrough. We have used the one above as it fits best in the list of children for Joseph and Ann Armfield Thornbrough. The other date of 2/29/1757 conflicts with the date of birth of his brother Edward.

On 8/31/1816 the family received a certificate at New Garden Monthly Meeting to Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Highland County, Ohio. There is some possibility they went to Ohio long before that, as at the marriage of their son Edward on 6/10/1812 at Stillwater Monthly Meeting in Ohio, their residence was given as Belmont County, Ohio. We tend to think that was in error as they received a certificate on the same date as son Joel and he married in North Carolina in 1815 (see below).

More on the Children of Joseph and Rachel Brown Thornbrough

William and Lydia Willis Thornbrough

Son William Thornbrough married Lydia Willis, daughter of Joel & Hannah Willis on 3/7/1810 at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County. Lydia was born 9/20/1788. On 10/26/1816 they received a certificate from New Garden Monthly Meeting to Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Ohio. Two children are listed for them: Samuel, born 12/9/1810, and Joel, born 6/26/1813. There may have been more. William died 1/3/1849 and his death is recorded at Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Highland County, Ohio. He is buried at Lees Creek in Highland County. Lydia died 11/9/1865 as recorded at Fairfield Monthly Meeting.

John and Elizabeth Beals Thornbrough

Son John W. Thornbrough married Elizabeth Beals, daughter of Daniel and Susannah Jackson Beals, on 6/29/1808 at Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Highland County, Ohio. Daniel Beals was son of Thomas and Sarah Ankram Beals. John Thornbrough received a certificate at New Garden on 3/26/1808 to Fairfield Monthly Meeting. Elizabeth was born 7/27/1825, recorded at New Garden Monthly Meeting, in Guilford County, North Carolina. Elizabeth died 3/9/1845 as recorded at Fairfield. John & Elizabeth had children: Rachel Beals Thornbrough, born 2/27/1807 (?probably 1809 based on marriage date); Louisa J. Thornbrough, born 1/14/1812; Isaac Norton Thornbrough, born 3/24/1817; and Cornelius Thornbrough, born about 1823 in Indiana (this birth place is from 1850 Indiana census records and may be in error). From census records: Isaac had wife Mary Ann, and Cornelius had wife Mary.

Joseph and Lydia Jackson Thornbrough

Son Joseph Thornbrough married Lydia Jackson, daughter of Jacob and Ann Beals Jackson, on 2/6/1812 at Lower East Fork in Highland County, Ohio. A Discourse on the Thornburg Family gives children Hannah, Joel, Elizabeth, Jacob, and Ruth. It states this family was the first to settle in Fairfield Township, Highland County, Ohio. We did not find them in Quaker records at Fairfield.

Edward and Elizabeth Judkins Thornbrough

Son Edward Thornbrough married Elizabeth Judkins, daughter of Joel & Lucy Judkins, on 6/10/1812 at Stillwater Monthly Meeting in Ohio. Elizabeth was born 4/1795 and died 11/24/1828 in Belmont County, Ohio. Their marriage record gives the residence of Edward's parents as Belmont County, Ohio. Edward and Elizabeth had children: Joel Judkins Thornbrough, born 3/30/1815, died 6/21/1815; Twin Joseph Brown Thornbrough, born 3/30/1815, died 9/14/1815; Edna Thornbrough, born 3/8/1817, died 5/1824; Lydia Jane Thornbrough, born 1/15/1820, married Thomas C. Parker; and Lucy Stanton Thornbrough, born 6/5/1822, and died 10/3/1823. A lot of tragedy in this family. We did not find a remarriage for Edward.

Joel and Ann Jessop Willis Thornbrough

Son Joel Thornbrough married Ann Jessop Willis, daughter of Joel & Hannah Willis, and sister of Lydia who married William Thornbrough, on 7/12/1815 at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina. Joel and wife received a certificate on 8/31/1816 to Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Ohio. This was the same date as his parent's certificate, however certificates were often obtained after the fact of a move so his parents probably actually moved earlier. Joel and Ann had children: Cyrus, William W., Mary Ann, and Lydia Jane. They resided in Lexington, Ohio, but later went to Carthage, Indiana.

Isaac and Elizabeth Hyatt Thornbrough

Son Isaac Thornbrough married Elizabeth Hyatt (per A Discourse on the Thornburg Family). We did not find a record of this marriage but did find that Isaac obtained a certificate at New Garden Monthly Meeting on 3/28/1818 to Leeds Creek Monthly Meeting in Ohio. The Thornburg Genealogy states he lived in Clinton, Ohio, and was a Judge of Common Pleas.

Hannah Thornbrough Willis

Daughter Hannah Thornbrough married Jonathan Willis, son of Joel & Hannah Willis, on 10/14/1813 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. She was third Thornbrough sibling to marry a Willis sibling. We have no further information on this family.
