North Carolina Records

James Thornbrough owned land in Guilford County just northwest of New Garden Meeting House (see map). He purchased the land in 1787.

Another interesting notation for this family at New Garden: 6/27/1807 Mallachi Gray, an apprentice, was received at the request of James Thornbrough. Since we do not know James's occupation we do not know what the apprenticeship was for.

More on the Children of James and Mary Moon Thornbrough

Thomas and Mary Perkins Thornbrough

Son Thomas Thornbrough received a certificate from New Garden on 2/27/1790 to go to Center Meeting to marry. He married Mary Perkins, daughter of Joseph and Ann Perkins. Apparently the marriage was not a Quaker ceremony as Thomas and Mary were dismissed for marriage out of unity on 4/26/1794. They apparently made their peace with the Quakers as their children are recorded at New Garden Monthly Meeting: James, born 2/19/1793; Ann born 11/3/1794; Joseph born 12/14/1798; Mary born 11/5/1800; Isaac, n.d., died 12/28/1819.

Thomas died 8/1/1833 and Mary died 3/22/1841. Their deaths are recorded at New Garden Meeting in Guilford County, so presumably they are buried in the New Garden burial ground. Son Isaac is listed as having a gravestone at New Garden burial ground, unusual for a Quaker.

In the June 1957 North Carolinian, in an article by Willard Heiss, a letter was printed that Thomas Thornbrough had written to his cousin Henry, son of Thomas and Martha Ballinger Thornbrough: Henry had removed to Warren County, Ohio in the Fall of 1814, and then to Wayne County, Indiana in March of 1820.
"2nd of 9th month 1820 My Good Frend
"I received thy Letter dated the 31st of the 7th month 1820 and at thy Request have read it to numbers of thy Good Friends in carrolinia, we all seemed to Rejoyce together to find that thee was moved to break in upon that solem silence that thee make mention of that has so long taken place among us & after a further pause I thought what if I was to speak a few words.
"It was very agreable to me to discover that thee had set they face new purchesward, and that thee had paid them Red Bretheren of the west a visit "I may inform thee I have had cimelar & increasing impressions of the kind myself and am inhopes if I attend properly to my business I may be favoured to persue my prospects in the course of a few months. I perceive thee has had a faint ide of our troubles in loosing our Son (Isaac) who was ceased last Christmas day with a violent complaint in his head whitch broke inside and fell in uppon his lungs and lived but four days to suffer the anquish of his pain, this was a triing seen indeed but I hope we stood resigned to say they will be done and not ours. my wife has Recently been attacted with a violent fever I have not had my Cloths off to go to bed for sixteen days and nights but by the help of a doctor and the aid of that phisition of vallue we think there is some hopes of her recovery.
"the flux and fever is very prevalent in our Land & many fresh Graves at new garden Meeting house; unkle john and aunt Bette (John & Elizabeth Thornbrough Farrington?) lives with Jesse (?) & prudence (Prudence Thornbrough Hunt?) the ould man is mostly confined to his bed and somewhat childish; Jane Macgrady looks ould & is vary weakly
"there is a Great ado here about moveing to the new country five familys started this week and more would go if they could get money but no money here: we had good crops of wheat and a Great prospect for corn we have plent of meat milk butter & chesse but distressing times for money but harvest times for the constables I was told by john hoskins lately that he had three hundred warrents put into his hands in one day and a number of Sails appointed and no biders; he had a sail in half a mile of my house sold one hundred dollars worth of property for nineteen & only Got the promis of money for that
"my mother siting by smoking her pipe of pese says do remember my love to them for I allways did love Henry & Becke; Daved & Vancy and their prety little daughter are also present desire to be remembered too; Mallekiah polle (Polly?) & their Little son have been very sick so that polle has not been to see her mother Since she had been Sick but once Jamy & wife is in tollerable health; my self wife & Joseph is all lthat is left now at home, so that if we could have money & health we have not much els to do but go and see you
"Farewell Mary & Thomas Thornburg."

It is difficult to identify some of the people in the letter. And the five families that he mentions starting north are not found in Quaker records at New Garden. Evidently Thomas never recovered sufficiently or did not accumulate enough money to go north since he died at New Garden in 1833. The letter is interesting in describing the hard times the people were having.

Richard and Judith Stanley Thornbrough

Son Richard Thornbrough married Judith Stanley, daughter of Shadrack & Agnes Stanley, 5/16/1798 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. Their children are not recorded at New Garden. However, the children are recorded at Center Monthly Meeting in Ohio: Shadrach, born 10/24/1801; Abigail, born 5/11/1804; Thomas, born 8/10/1806; Martha, born 5/12/1808; Mary, born 10/5/1810; Jonathan, born 1/10/1812.

Richard and Judith and family received a certificate on 10/31/1807 at New Garden to transfer to Center Monthly Meeting in Ohio. The last three children were born in Ohio. Some of the children were dismissed for disunity with the Quakers in future years and the marriages of some are recorded at Center Monthly Meeting. Richard's death is reported 11/27/1830 at Center and he is buried there. Judith died 10/5/1837 and is buried at New Hope in Ohio.

Benjamin Thornbrough

Son Benjamin Thornbrough received a certificate at New Garden on 11/2/1799 to Lost Creek Meeting in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Receipt of the certificate is not recorded at Lost Creek, so Benjamin apparently changed his mind. He married out of unity and was dismissed from New Garden Monthly meeting on 2/27/1802. We have no further information on him (researchers beware - there is much Benjamin Thornbrough information in Jefferson County, Tennessee, but that Benjamin and son Benjamin are descendants through another line of Thomas and Sarah Hamman Thornbrough. They arrived at Lost Creek directly from Virginia.

Rachel Thornbrough Mendenhall

Daughter Rachel Thornbrough married James Mendenhall, son of Aaron and Miriam Rich Mendenhall, on 11/16/1796 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. James was born 10/24/1776.

James & Rachel Mendenhall had children: Mary born 8/29/1797, died 11/29/1799; Miriam, born 7/20/1799; John & Ann, born 9/6/1801; James, born 2/21/1804, died 3/17/1805; Aaron, born 4/24/1806; Mary born 1/10/1809, died 12/12/1820; Susanna, born 11/30/1810.

As an heir of Aaron, James received a portion of five shillings left to Aaron's children in the will of Mordecai Mendenhall in 1803.

There is a notation in New Garden Monthly Meeting minutes on 8/5/1813 that Rachel Mendenhall, a widow, of Guilford County, married Barthen Jessop. We do not see another Rachel at that meeting so it was probably Rachel Thornbrough Mendenhall.

Susannah Thornbrough Rayl

Daughter Susannah Thornbrough married Nathan Rayl 1/1/1800 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. Their children are recorded at New Garden: Thomas, born 10-1-1800; James, born 1/7/1803; Caleb, born 10-17-1804; Nathan, born 11/16/1806; Richard, born 12-28-1808; and George, born 2/22/1811.

Abigail Thornbrough Stanley

Daughter Abigail Thornbrough married Edward Stanley 10/10/1804 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. Edward was son of Shadrack and Agnes Stanley and brother of Judith Stanley above.

Ann Thornbrough Jackson

Daughter Ann Thornbrough married Unknown Jackson (out of unity?).

Mary Thornbrough

Daughter Mary Thornbrough is probably the one dismissed for marriage out of unity in 1804 at New Garden.

Martha Thornbrough Beard

Daughter Martha Thornbrough married George Beard on 7/6/1814 at New Garden Meeting. George was one of several Beards living along Deep River who were descended from John Beard of Nantucket and not related to the Beard family found in these pages. George Beard was born 3/24/1789 and died 1/21/1853. His death is recorded at Deep River Monthly Meeting so he is probably buried there.

Several of the Nantucket Beards are documented at Deep River Monthly Meeting. When George was married, he was granted a certificate from Deep River to New Garden to marry and his wife Martha was received back at Deep River on 3/4/1816. In 1823 George and Martha transferred their membership to New Garden and then in 1832 back to Deep River. The area where they lived can be seen on the Guilford County map.

The children of George and Martha Beard are recorded at Deep River Monthly Meeting: Mary, born 9/17/1817; Elum, born 11/25/1820; Rebecca, born 9/12/1825; and Nathan, born 2/20/1828. Son Nathan was probably named for Martha's brother Nathan who died young.
