The Move to Indiana

There is an entry at Honey Creek Monthly Meeting in Howard County, Indiana, on 4/10/1824 that John Mills and sons William, Ira, Millikan and John Marshall were received on certificate from Lost Creek Monthly Meeting. Women's certificate information is not available. There is no further entry at Honey Creek but the entire family is documented in full at Vermilion Monthly Meeting in Vermilion County, Illinois so their certificate may have simply been endorsed over to Vermilion. The list of children at Vermilion adds Charity Jane to the list from Lost Creek.

Ruth Mills Lorrance

According to Jefferson County Families and History, Ruth Mills married John Larrance on 3/26/1816 in Jefferson County. He was son of Richard and Jane Hammond Larrance. Both Ruth and John were Quakers but were dismissed for their marriage contrary to discipline at Lost Creek MM in 1816. Both made their peace with the Quakers and were granted certificates to Vermilion Monthly Meeting in Vermilion County, Illinois. The certificates were received on 2/7/1829 at Vermilion. John's certificate enumerated sons Moses, Leroy and William and Ruth's certificate enumerated daughters Edith, Charity and Jane. John was complained of on 5/5/1832 for distilling spiritous liquors. He was dismissed on 9/1/1832 with power to appeal. John Larrance is listed as deceased at the marriage of his son William to Mary Hester on 3/5/1849 at Vermilion.

Ruth Mills Larrance continued her Quaker membership and was appointed overseer at Vermilion MM on 5/4/1844. In the 1850 census in Vermilion County Ruth is living alone near son Moses. With her is another son Jonathan Larrance, age 17, born Illinois. We will obtain more information from the Vermilion records.
