Although the connections to the Woodward family are peripheral, we have included this Marshall/Marshill family on this site in the hopes that it will help sort out the descendants from those of Abraham Woodward's ancestor, Abraham Marshall. The Abraham Marshall family originated in England, while this William Marshall family originated in Ireland. The Marshall name is very common in England, hence there are likely no connections between the two families.

William Marshall was son of Jacob & Anne Marshall of County Tyrone, Ireland. William and his brother John Marshall immigrated to America (more on John Marshall below). The name is often given as Marshill in the early Quaker records but is often found as Marshall in other records.

Rebecca Dixon was daughter of Thomas & Hannah Dixon of New Castle County, Delaware.

The Move to North Carolina

William & Rebecca Marshall were received 12/2/1752 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County, North Carolina. Their certificate was dated 5/16/1749 from New Garden Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. On 1/12/1764 they donated 26 acres of land for Cane Creek Meeting House. In 1807 their son, John Marshall, requested ten acres of the land back from Cane Creek Monthly Meeting.

William Marshall's brother, John Marshall, married Ruth Hadley in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in about 1744, and they too came to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Orange County, North Carolina (certificate 12/6/1755 from Concord Monthly Meeting to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting). Their children are listed at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. There were thus many descendants of the Irish Marshall/Marshill family in the North Carolina area, and later in Indiana.
