James Woodward was second child and oldest son of William and Eliza Marshall Woodward. He was older brother of Abraham Woodward, the subject of this web site. James & Alice Woodward migrated westward in Pennsylvania while other family members went south to North Carolina.

Sarah Alice Thornbrough is thought to have been a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Thornbrough. This is not proven (see the Thornbrough page).

Records for the Family

We have chosen to use the list of children enumerated in the original DAR application for James Woodward (application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, based on Revolutionary War service). However, as anyone doing research knows, Many of the early applications were notoriously inaccurate so we are open to proof for any other children. Unfortunately, we have been unable to locate a copy of James Woodward's will which would be the most authentic source. The same information can be found in the book The Woodward Family of Chester County, Pennsylvania by J. Gary Woodward. He also has considerable information on some of the descendants.

The names given the children are instructive, as Thomas and Sarah were probably named after Thomas and Sarah Thornbrough, constituting fairly good proof that Sarah Alice Thornbrough Woodward was indeed their daughter. The first girl would usually have been named after the paternal grandmother, so her name may have been Eliza and it was translated to Elizabeth in later generations, as Eliza was sometimes a nickname for Elizabeth. Be very, very careful of information from the Ancestral File that has been used by many people in their families. They cheerfully chop Sarah Alice Thornbrough into three people and give James three wives: Sarah Thorn; Alice Thorn; and either Sarah or Alice with still another spelling of Thornbrough.!

James Woodward was a birthright Quaker and his birth is recorded at Bradford Monthly Meeting where his grandfather Richard Woodward, Jr. was Elder. The only other records found for James are attendance at various family member marriages, the last in 1765. There is also an entry at Bradford on 5/18/1758 where James acknowledged his fault for marriage by a priest to one not a member, which tells us that Sarah Alice was not a Quaker. Apparently Sarah Alice did not become a member and James did not continue his membership, as we find no further Quaker records for them.

James Woodward served in the Revolutionary War. He is listed as a private in the Sixth Class of Captain Thomas Carpenter's West Bradford Company, Chester County, Militia. His occupation is listed as weaver. It is from his DAR papers that we learn of the death dates of James and Sarah. The dates are probably correct as neither one is found in the 1820 census in Mifflin County. Their son Thomas is found in Mifflin County in 1820, so we feel they had not moved away. (See Pennsylvania maps for location of Mifflin County in central Pennsylvania.)

More on Children of James and Sarah Alice Thornbrough Woodward

Thomas and Polly Monteith Woodward

We are grateful to Tim Terry for information on Thomas and Polly Montieth Woodward (See his Web Site). His site includes information on their children. So far the known children of Thomas and Polly Woodward are Alice, John, and David. We would love to hear of any more. We have not been able to locate a will for Thomas in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, but he may have died in Ohio.

Renate Woodward is a descendant of Thomas & Polly Montieth's son John Woodward and wife Barbara Bean Woodward and has much information on that family. Robert Burl Woodward (Renate's father-in-law) has researched this family for many years. He has diaries of George Truesdell whose mother was Sarah Woodward Truesdell, daughter of John and Barbara Bean Woodward. Robert's descendancy is through John & Barbara's son John, then his son Merritt, and his son Edmund. We have some family group sheets from Renate Woodward and have a page for John & Barbara Bean Woodward.

Jehu and Rachel Roman Woodward

Jehu Woodward married Rachel Roman, daughter of Abraham Roman, on 30 March, 1790. Their family has been submitted to Ancestry.Com's World Family Tree. These records are freely availabe, just type in Jehu Woodward when the search page comes up, then United States and Pennsylvania. We cannot, of course vouch for the accuracy of this information. It is interesting though that some of their descendants lived in Lordstown, Trumbull County, Ohio, as did descendants of Thomas & Polly Woodward.

We do not at the present time plan to carry this family further than as mentioned above as we have no research of our own from proven sources, but we hope the above contacts will be helpful to researchers.
