Jane & daughters were granted a certificate to White Lick Monthly Meeting in Morgan County, Indiana, on 9/26/1835 from Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Tennessee. White Lick Monthly Meeting also served the residents of Hendricks County. Ezra's record of receiving a certificate to White Lick is lost as are the birth records of all the children born at Lost Creek after Jesse. White Lick Monthly meeting records the receipt of a certificate on 11/18/1835 for Ezra & sons Ira, Jesse, William, & Benjamin and for Jane & daughters Lucinda, Elizabeth Ann, & Martha Jane, indicating Abigail was born after their arrival.

Ezra Hinshaw bought three parcels of land in Hendricks County on 3/30/1837. In the 1850 Census in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Jane's mother, Elizabeth Millikan Woodward Macy, is living with them.

More on the Children of Ezra and Jane Woodward Hinshaw

Lucinda Hinshaw Hadley

Noah Hadley, who married Lucinda Hinshaw, was brother of Ruth Hadley who married Jane Woodward Hinshaw's nephew William A. Woodward. William A. Woodward was son of Jane's brother Samuel Woodward.

Jesse and Julia Hadley Hinshaw and Martha Jane Hinshaw Hadley

Julia Hadley, who married Jesse Hinshaw was daughter of Joseph & Mary Hinshaw Hadley. Owen Hadley, who married Martha Jane Hinshaw was son of John & Sarah Holladay Hadley. These connections are explored on the Hadley Page.

William and Louisa Stalker Hinshaw

Louisa Stalker, who married William Hinshaw, was daughter of George & Hannah Millikan Stalker. Hannah Millikan Stalker was daughter of Benjamin Millikan, brother of Elizabeth Millikan Woodward, Jane Woodward Hinshaw's mother. Louisa and William were thus second cousins.

William Hinshaw is found in Richland Keokuk County, Iowa in the 1880 census: #134 #154 William Hinshaw, 53, farmer, Tn, Tn, NC; Sarah, 50 In, Oh, Oh; Oscar, 23, son Ia Tn NC farm laborer; Margaret, 21, domestic, Ia; Alta, 20, Ia Tn NC; Elvin, 13, son Ia, Tn, Oh; Alfred Crakenl(??? can't really read) 12, step grandson, Ks, Ia, In Sarah, 10, step granddaughter, Ks, Ia, In John, 8, step grandson, Ks, Ia, In; #155 Alphonse Hinshaw, 25, farmer, Ia Tn NC Frances, 22, wife, Ia, Pa, Oh

We are not certain if Elvin is son of William and Sarah and the Ohio birthplace of mother is just an error or if there was another wife in between as we do not find another marriage record for William in either Indiana or Iowa. It is clear though that all the children mentioned except Elvin were children of William and Louisa Stalker.

More on Ezra and Jane Woodward Hinshaw

The deaths of Ezra & Jane Hinshaw are recorded in the diary of their nephew John Smith Woodward, son of Jane's brother William Woodward. However, he records Jane's birthdate as 2/14/1797 which does not agree with Quaker records.

Dixie Richardson has information on the Jesse Hinshaw/Julia Hadley Hinshaw family. Debbie was kind enough to furnish us copies of Hinshaw family photographs that were included in the 1964 Richland (Iowa) Homecoming Book and a biography that was included in the 1976 Bicentennial Richland History. The article was written by Kathryn Elvira Hinshaw (1880-1978), wife of Charles R. Jones. The Ezra and Jane photo is from the Homecoming book.
