Woodward Home Page

It is not our intent to provide a comprehensive Hadley Genealogy here as it is a large and complicated family. There were many, many links between the Hadley and Woodward families and we intend only to provide sufficient information from the Quaker records to assist Woodward family researchers.

Joshua Hadley, son of Simon & Ruth Miller Hadley, born 6 March 1703 in Ireland, married as second wife, Patience Brown, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Brown in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He had been previously married to Mary Rowland 2 July 1725 at New Garden MM in Chester Co, Pa.

Patience was born 5/26/1712; died 5/23/1763 at Cane Creek, North Carolina and buried at Cane Creek. There is a notation 10/2/1756 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in North Carolina under Hadley: Patience (Hadly) (with h) and children rocf New Garden MM, Pa.

More on the Children of Joshua and Patience Brown Hadley

Joshua and Mary Hadley

Joshua and Mary may have married in Pennsylvania as there is a Mary Hadley received on certificate from New Garden MM in Pennsylvania on 1/7/1758. On 5/2/1759 Jeremiah Hadley was dismissed for mou (marriage out of unity with the Quaker faith). . On 7/6/1782 Mary, (Hadly) , wife of Jeremiah was recrq (received by request). Jeremiah apparently also made his peace but it is not recorded. The children were all received by request shortly after Marys record and were recrq of their parents, Jeremiah and Mary. The result is that the children are documented at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting as follows.

The children of Jeremiah and Mary Hadley (b. 6/12/1744) are given at Cane Creek MM in North Carolina: Lydia (b. 10/14/1760), Joshua (b. 8/11/1763), Jeremiah (b. 8/31/1768), Mary (b. 3/17/1771), James (1/31/1774), Sarah (b. 10/2/1776), Patience (b. 1/9/1780), John (b. 9/17/1782), and Jane (b. 5/17/1785).
Joshua Hadley: Joshua, son of Jeremiah and Mary of Holly Spring, married Elizabeth Barker, daughter of Nicholas and Hannah Allen Barker on 1/18/1787 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Joshua & Elizabeth Barker Hadley had a son Simon B. Hadley born 5/9/1795. He married Sarah T. Hadley, daughter of Simon and Elizabeth Thomas Hadley. That Simon Hadley was son of Joshua and Ruth Lindley Hadley (below) and Simon B. and Sarah T. Hadley were thus second cousins. There were numerous Woodward connections in their descendants.

(1)Simon and Sarah Hadley had a son Noah Hadley born 29 Jan 1825 in Chatham County, North Carolina. He married (1)Lucinda Hinshaw on 8 Oct 1846 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Lucinda Hinshaw was daughter of Ezra and Jane Woodward Hinshaw and Jane Woodward Hinshaw was daughter of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward. Noah married again to Millicent Weesner on 7 December 1865 in Morgan County, Indiana. Noah is found in 1870 in Blackhawk Township, Jefferson County, Iowa: #122 Noah Hadley, 45, farmer, born NC; Malissa, 46, NC; Benjamin, 22, farmer, In; Ezra, 20, farmer, In; Sylvester, 16, farmer, In; Jane, 14, In; Ira, 10, In; Enos, 4, Iowa. Enos is a child of Millicent/Malissa(?) and the rest are children of Lucinda Hinshaw and thus related to Woodwards.

(2)Simon and Sarah Hadley had a son Jeremiah Hadley born 11 Feb 1816 as recorded at Cane Creek MM in North Carolina. Jeremiah married Anna Maria Mills, daughter of Henry and Hannah Woodward Mills and granddaughter of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward (link above). Some of their children are listed at White Lick MM in Indiana. A History of Hardin County, Iowa gives the names of the children living in 1885 as Henry M. Hadley; Perry C. Hadley; Seth M. Hadley; and Mahlon Hadley. The 1850 census in Monroe, Morgan Co, In (next to Benjamin Woodward, son of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward) gives us more children: #332 Jeremiah Hadley, 35, farmer, NC; Anna, 36, Tn; Henry, 12, In; Perry, 11, In; Enoch, 9, In; Cyrus, 6, In; Charity, 4, In; Calvin 2, In; Seth 1/12 In. We were unable to trace the family further. These children are also then related to Woodwards. We also have a question about Perry Hadley. Benjamin Woodward had a son Perry who would have been 11 years old in 1850 and he is not with widower Benjamin in the census. We wonder if he was visiting next door and incorrectly censused as a Hadley, or perhaps the Hadleys took him to live with them as he is listed as their son in the Hardin County History.

(3)Simon and Sarah Hadley had a daughter Martha Hadley, who married Josiah Mills, a son of Henry and Hannah Woodward Mills, and brother of Anna Maria Mills Hadley above. There is more about the family on the Mills page.

(4)Simon and Sarah Hadley had a daughter Ruth Hadley, who married William A. Woodward 21 July 1836 in Hendricks County, Indiana. William Woodward was son of Samuel and Abigail Shelley Woodward. They are found in the 1850 census in Keokuk County, Iowa: #105 William A. Woodward, 34, farmer, born Tn; Ruth, 31, NC; Emma, In; Simon, Ia; Eliza, Ia; Levi, In. Additional children were Alfred H; Nathan; and Henry. Ruth Hadley Woodward transferred on certificate 8 January 1876 from Honey Creek MM in Hardin County, Iowa, to Center MM in Jasper County, Iowa. There is much more about William and Ruth Hadley Woodward on Marion Monks Web Site: William A. Woodward.

(5) Simon and Sarah Hadley had a son Moses Hadley, born about 1830 in Indiana. Moses married Mary Elizabeth Woodward, daughter of Jesse and Rhoda Morgan Woodward 20 May 1866 at Sugar Grove MM. Moses had evidently been married before as the family is found in Guilford, Hendricks County, Indiana in 1870 three doors from Jesse Woodward: #176 Moses Hadley, 40, farmer, born In; Mary, 34, In; Zilpha, 17, In; Brazelton, 12, works on farm, In; Marion M., 9, born In. The naming of a child Brazelton suggests that was the surname of Jesses first wife. We do not believe Mary and Moses had children together.

Joshua and Ruth Lindley Hadley

Joshua married Ruth Lindley Hadley, daughter of Thomas and Ruth Hadley Lindley, and granddaughter of Simon and Ruth Miller Hadley. Joshua and Ruth were thus first cousins and as such would not have been allowed a Quaker marriage. They had several children with connections to other families on this Web Site. (1)

Daughter Sarah Hadley married Eli Newlin, son of John and Mary Pyle Newlin, and grandson of John and Mary Woodward Newlin. (2)Son Thomas Hadley married Mary Newlin, daughter of John and Mary Pyle Newlin, and sister of Eli Newlin above. There is more on both of these families on the John and Mary Pyle Newlin page. (3)

Son Simon Hadley married Elizabeth Thompson and they were parents of Sarah T. Hadley above who married Simon T. Hadley, son of Joshua and Elizabeth Barker. (4)

Son Joshua Hadley married (1)Lydia Hiatt and (2) Rebecca Hinshaw. In 1812 and 1813 respectively Joshua and Rebecca were dismissed at Cane Creek MM for their marriage out of unity with the Quaker faith. We could not locate Rebeccas parentage in the Quaker records but there is a fairly well researched site giving information: Rebecca Hinshaw.

Joshua and Rebecca evidently made their peace with the Quakers as they are found with their children in the records of Spring Monthly Meeting in North Carolina: Joshua Hadley b 12-13-1783; Lydia Hadley b 4-15-1786 (d. 4-15-1806) Ch: Jane Hadley b 9-8-1804; Rebecca Hadley, 2nd wife Joshua b 2-20-1789; Ch: Mary b 7-23-1810; Zeno b 2-15-1812; Nathan b. 12-1-1814; Job b 2-9-1816; Milton b. 10-13-1817; Susannah b 12-1-1818; Asenath b. 1-21-1822; Ruth b 10-10-1824; b. Mordecai b 6-19-1827; Addison b. 9-15-1830; Esther B. 4-34-1833. Of interest to us is Susannah Hadley who married Pryor Calvin Woodward, son of Samuel and Abigail Shelley Woodward. There is more about Prior and Susannah on Marion Monks Web site at Prior Calvin Woodward. (5)Son Joseph Hadley, born Jun 13, 1787, married Mary Hinshaw, twin sister of Rebecca Hinshaw who married his brother Joshua above. There is more about Joseph and Mary on the site above about Rebecca Hinshaw. Joseph and Mary had a daughter Julia Hadley, born 12-6-1824 who married Jesse Hinshaw, son of Ezra and Jane Woodward Hinshaw on 1 December 1819 at Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Tennessee. There is more about Jesse and Julia on the Ezra Hinshaw page and there is also a link there to a Hinshaw Web Site.

Joseph and Mary are found in 1850 in Keokuk County, Iowa: Joseph Hadley, 63, born North Carolina; Mary, 63, born North Carolina; Westley Allen, 10, NC; Ruby Allen, 9, NC (possibly grandchildren?). On the same property there is another household: John Hadley, 41, farmer, born NC; Sarah, 39, North Carolina; Levi, 21, NC; Zeno, 19, NC; Owen, 17, NC, Ira, 9, NC; Edward, 7, In; Wm, 5, In. This appears to be a son of Joseph and Mary. The age fits since they were married in 1808. John Hadley was reported mou on 25 Oct 1828 at Spring MM in NC (date of report so marriage was before that date.) His wife was Sarah Holladay and we do not know her parentage. Their son Owen Hadley married Martha Jane Hinshaw, daughter of Ezra and Jane Woodward Hinshaw about 1860.

Lydia Hadley Holladay

Samuel and Lydia Hadley Holladay had a son Joshua Holladay born 8/7/1777, Chatham County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Beard 10/16/1799 at Springfield Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina. Sarah Beard was daughter of John & Martha Beard and there is a small amount of information about Joshua & Sarah Beard Holladay on the John & Marth Beard page on this site.
