History of John and Lydia Hussey Cook Family

John Cook's dismissal at New Garden Monthly Meeting does not give a reason. This usually meant dismissal for nonattendance at meeting. John & Lydia's marriage was considered out of unity, since at the time of the marriage John was not in the Quaker faith. Because of this lapse in their faith, we do not find birth records for the children.

John & Lydia made their amends with the Quakers, for on 9/26/1807 they were given a certificate to Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County from New Garden Monthly Meeting. We learn the names of the children from a notation in Westfield Monthly Meeting Minutes that Jesse, Levi, Stephen, Mary & Henry were received at the request of their father John Cook. This record also tells us that Nathan was born sometime after 1807. He is listed on the certificate received for John & Lydia at White Lick Monthly Meeting in Morgan County, Indiana, on 6/14/1828. John & Lydia probably arrived earlier in Indiana as daughter Mary Cook married Joshua Marshall 25 September 1827, in Hendricks County, Indiana (married out of unity). Son Henry Cook married Elizabeth Bray 12/15/1828 in Morgan County, Indiana.

We have unverified information that John Cook was buried in April 1842 at New Garden Monthly Meeting. If so it was probably New Garden Meeting in Indiana. There is some possibility it was North Carolina as son Henry did return to North Carolina in 1838 and John might have gone with him or gone to visit him at some time.

We know that Levi, Stephen & Jesse Cook had proper Quaker marriages. Levi married Hannah Jackson, daughter of Jehu and Hope Jessop Jackson, on 9/12/1815 at Westfield MM, Stokes County, North Carolina. Stephen married Patience Marshall, daughter of William & Elizabeth Bills Marshall (Marshill) and granddaughter of William and Rebecca Dixon Marshall (linked at top of the page), on 2/13/1820. Jesse married Hannah Marshall, sister of Patience, on 4/18/1821. Jesse & Hannah received a certificate to Springfield Monthly Meeting in Indiana, on 9/14/1822.

Lydia Cook is found in the 1850 census in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. She is listed as 79 years old, born North Carolina, real estate valued at $1200. Son Nathan Cook is living with her,age 42, occupation farm laborer. He is listed as "idiotic." Son Jesse Cook is also living with her, a widower, farmer, age 57, real estate valued at $3800. He has children Milton, age 21, Elizabeth, age 16, John, age 14, and Zimri, age 10, with him. There are two Hussey families living next to them who were probably relatives of Lydia.

Lydia Hussey Cook is named on the marriage record (#2) of Jesse Cook to Mary Hadley, daughter of Simon and Elizabeth Hadley, 7/1/1852, at White Lick Monthly Meeting, Morgan County, Indiana. John Cook is listed as deceased on the marriage certificate. Lydia was still alive, age 89 in the 1860 census and living with son Nathan.

Levi & Hannah Jackson Marshall received a certificate to White Lick Monthly Meeting in Morgan County, Indiana on 8/14/1824. The transfer certificate names children Hiram, Eli and Betsey (Elizabeth) Cook. They also had a son John Cook, born 10/17/1826 in Hendricks County, Indiana.

Daughters of Stephen & Patience Marshall Cook married sons of Samuel and Abigail Shelley Woodward in Indiana. See Marion Monks Web Site on Stephen Cook (linked above under Stephen under the children) for more information.
