Rachel Beeson Haworth Chamness
-------------------------------------------------------

Rachel Beeson was daughter of Richard and Charity Grubb Beeson of Chester County, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina. She married (1) Stephanus Haworth and (2) Anthony Chamness.

Stephanus Haworth was son of George & Sarah Scarbrough Haworth of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The name is also seen spelled as Hayworth. There is an extensive Haworth Family Association site including access to George's will. Our intent here is to then only document enough of the Haworth genealogy to assist Woodward and Thornborough descendants in finding links to their families. We are grateful to Ron Haworth of the Haworth Association for assistance in correcting some errors on this page.

More on Stephanus and Rachel Beeson Haworth

Rachel Beeson's parents were received on certificate from Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Virginia at New Garden Monthly Meeting in Rowan County, North Carolina on 11/20/1754. We do not know for sure when they went to Virginia. We also do not know for sure if Rachel and Stephanus were married there because of the loss of many Hopewell Meeting records.

Stephanus Haworth's parents were married at Falls Meeting House in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on 9/28/1710. They had at least four known children, James Frederick, Stephanus, Absalom, and John Haworth. Stephanus Haworth and brother Absalom were granted a certificate to Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Virginia by Buckingham Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania on 8/4/1738. James was granted a certificate from Buckingham MM to Hopewell on 6/6/1739. This would be in line with a marriage date of about 1740 for Rachel and Stephanus at Hopewell.

We do not find a certificate for transfer of Stephanus and Rachel Haworth to North Carolina but, if we assume they came with Rachel's parents, they came in 1754. Unfortunately, their children's birth records are not found in either Virginia or North Carolina Quaker records.

Stephanus Haworth died in Rowan County, North Carolina, sometime before 1766 and on 9/1/1766 Rachel Beeson Haworth married Anthony Chamness at New Garden Monthly Meeting. In addition to her own six children Rachel now had twelve stepchildren, the youngest age 5. For more on Anthony Chamness see http://www.garlock-elliott.org/narrative/chamness_02.html Anthony Chamnesss will is given on that site but he had married again after Rachels death so she is not the step mother mentioned in the will.

A note of caution on the descendants of Stephanus and Rachel Beeson Haworth

Records of Stephanus and Rachel's descendants are further complicated by the arrival at Newhope Monthly Meeting in Greene County, Tennessee, in 1796, of some of Stephanus's brother James Haworth's descendants from Bush River, South Carolina, where his widow, Sarah Wood Haworth, and family had transferred from Hopewell.

James & Sarah Wood Haworth had sons named George, James, and Richard, all of whom immigrated to Tennessee. Some of James & Sarah's descendants then immigrated north to Ohio and Indiana.

Stephanus's brother James had a son James who married Mary Rees. James and Mary had son's named George & James Haworth. James, Mary and children transferred to Miami Monthly Meeting in Ohio on 7/21/1804 from Newhope Meeting in Greene County, Tennessee.

James Haworth (Jr.) married Phebe Thornbrough in 1810 in Highland County, Ohio. George Haworth married Jane Thornbrough in 1812 in Highland County, Ohio. Phebe Thornbrough Haworth and Jane Thornbrough Haworth were daughters of Edward and Phebe Sumner Thornbrough. Edward Thornbrough, his children and his second wife, Keziah Wright, had transferred to Miami Monthly Meeting in Ohio in 1806. The two marriages of James & Phebe and George & Jane were civil marriages. James Haworth and wife Phebe were restored to Quaker membership on 7/28/1821 at Lees Creek Monthly Meeting. George Haworth and wife Jane were restored to Quaker membership at Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Indiana on 3/27/1830. (The two dates given are the dates that Fairfield Monthly Meeting in Ohio gave permission for their restoration to membership.)
