Mary G. Gallagher
Mary Geniveve Monaghan was the
first born child of James and Mary Monaghan. Born on May 1, 1902,
she grew up on Union Ave. in Belleville,N.J. attending St. Peters school
and then went to business school. She went to work in the lumber business
where she eventually met and married John Gallagher. They were married
at St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City. Together they owned and
ran the Federal Lumber Co in Belleville.
Mary gave birth to her first
born Joyce Gallagher on August 28th, 1935. On November 4th, 1937, she had
twins--Dale Gallagher and Mark Gallagher. The children were
born in the Newark NJ.
Mary eventually formed her own
firm the Mary G. Gallagher Lumber Co. She bought a 17 room
house at 219 Sylvania Ave. in Avon by the Sea on the New Jersey shore.
She raised the children there
and managed to take on the responsibilities for brothers and sisters, nieces
and nephews, and even some newcomers to the country. The house was
the central meeting place for the Monaghan family especially in the summer
when all the clan would come down for vacation.
Mary G. Gallagher--The True Matriarch
of the Monaghan Family--passed away on December 5, 1977 and is buried in
Newark NJ.
