Elizabeth McWhorter applies for widow�s pension

In order to obtain the Benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th July 1838 Entitled an Act Granting half (pay?) and pensions to (--?) widows

On this twenty third day of January Eighteen Hundred and thirty-nine personally appeared before me Jesse Coffey one of the Justices of the peace for the County of Casey Elizabeth McWhorter a resident of Casey County aged Seventy-six years who being First duly sworn according to Law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 Entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to (veterans?) Widows, that She is the Widow of John McWhorter who was a Soldier of the Army of the Revolutionary War of the United States and was a pensioner under the Act of Congress of the 7th June 1832 for service (--?) the State of South Carolina as stated by him in his declaration (--?) upon file (in?) the pension office or War Department of the United States, She further Declares that she was married to the said John McWhorter in the Fourteenth day of April, Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Four, that her Husband the aforesaid John McWhorter, died on the Seventh Day of June, Eighteen Hundred and Thirty Three that She was not married to him prior to his leaving the Service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January Seventeen Hundred and Ninetythree Viz, at the time above stated & that she never afterward was married.

On the 23rd Day of January 1839 Personally appeared George Portman of Said County being sixtynine(?) years of age & made oath that he has been well acquainted with the applicant Elizabeth McWhorter from the time of her marriage to her husband John McWhorter he being brother to my Mother & I always heard him call her his Lawfull Wife & that they were married at the time she has stated ever lived near them until his death. Salley Pigg aged 53 years, daughter of the applicant states upon oath she has oftimes Seen it (--?) recorded in the Family Bible that her Mother and Father was married on the Day as Stated in the applicants Declaration. Robert McWhorter Son of the applicant States he had in his possession the Family Bible of his Father but (--? worn Out?) but will (--?) It was there recorded that John McWhorter & his wife who is the applicant was married on the 14th Day of April 1784, Sworn & Subscribed the 23rd Day of January 1839 Jesse Coffey JP
