Picture 1: The Wagner Brothers, Matthew and John, emigrated to America in 1868, sailing from Antwerp to Liverpool, and on April 15, thence on the "Erin" landing in New York the 9th of May.

The "Erin" was a 3.325 gross ton ship, length 370.4 ft x beam 41.1 ft. clipper stem, one funel, three masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 10 knots. Built by Palmer Bros & Co, Jarrow-on-Tyne, for the National Line, she was launched on 18 June 1864. She sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to Queenstown (Cobh) and New York on 2 August 1864 and in 1865 carried the surviviors of the burnt out Inman Liner "Glasgow" to New York. She commenced her first London-Havre-New York voyage on 25 June 1871. In 1872 she was rebuilt to 3.956 tons and in 1873 was fitted with compound engines by J.Penn & Son, London. She started her last London-New York voyage on 24 Sept 1876 and in 1876-77 was lengthened to 418.8 ft, 4.577 tons, her saloon cabins rebuilt amidships, and with accommodation for 72-1st and 1200-3rd class passengers. On 4 July 1877 she resumed the Liverpool-Queenstown-New York service and on 28 October 1879 commenced her last crossing on this route. She resumed London-New York sailings on 17 Dec 1879 and on 31 Dec 1889 left New York for London but went missing with the loss of 72 lives.
