BRIEF HISOTRY & PEDIGREE
Oscar was born Oskari Kaarle Känsäkoski, on October 07, in the year of 1887. He was born in the Parish of Kaustinen, Finland to Matts Carlss. Känsäkoski and Anna Greta Johanssdr. Känsäkoski. He was the 5th child of 8, having 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
He left Finland at the age of 19 to come to America. His Sister Maria was here already living in Pennsylvania and Oscar stayed with her for a couple of years working in the mines with her husband, Charles Nieminen. He got typhoid fever and was sick for a long period of time. After that he moved to Minnesota and went to work in the mines at Hibbing. He didn’t like working in the mines.
Oscar came to Floodwood, Minnesota around 1908 and went to work for John Junnikala’s on a farm. This is where he met Hilda Kristiina, who was John Junnikala’s stepdaughter. They married on November 27, 1909 after Oscar has nursed Hilda back to health after she almost died from Diphtheria. They had 13 children together.
Oscar died on 11/24/1940 of pneumonia after being accidentally shot when his rifle slid off a stump and discharged. He had a pocket watch in his overalls that saved his life from the gunshot but with the cold weather he came down with pneumonia and died after 3 days in the hospital.
There are very few photos of my Great Grandfather that I have seen, But this one above is my favorite of him.
