Siama and Arvo Lyly

Above: Saima and Arvo Lyly with Sons Alvin and Arnold is the little guy.

Married on 8/11/1935 in Wawina, Minnesota. in 1936 or 1937 they came to California to work in the woods. They soon ended up in a small logging camp called Shake City
It was located along the Pacific Railroad line that had just been finished. They made railroad ties by falling and hand hewing the ties. I often heard her speak of all of those times as some of the best times of her life. Before she died in 1984 she would often tell us the she was "ready to go to shake city". We all knew what she meant.
After that they moved to Camp 2 at Ten Mile just north of Fort Bragg, CA and then to Camp 3 at Ten Mile. Later they lived in a house on Highway 20 known as the Newman Ranch. I still drive by there when visiting Fort Bragg. It is easy to spot as the outhouse was inside of a Redwood Tree!!
After this the family bought a house on Sanderson Way. In 1948 Arvo started a lumber or planing mil l(named Lylys Resaw and Planing mill) and Siama and a partner had a restaurant called the Bee Hive. In 1958 Arvo started a trucking company (Lyly & Sons) with Arnold driving truck for him. When Arnold went into the Army reserves for 6 months Alvin then did the driving, a couple of years later Arvo sold the planing mill and bought another truck. (Then another, then another) The company is still in business today. (Year of 2001) Siama and Arvo moved to Ukiah in 1964 and lived in a trailer park on Lake Mendocino Drive. Later around 1980 they moved next to my parents on East side Calpella Road. They family had a 50th wedding anniversary party for them in 1985 at the Parducci Winery, there were lots of relatives on hand to celebrate with them. Should my grandma had lived one more year they would have been married 60 years! Siama passed away in May of 1994 at the age of 77. Arvo passed away in May of 2001 at the age of 89.
