"Perry (Perkins) was one of the early homesteaders in Loup County.  He was engaged in farming and ranching for many years.  Perry carried mail for twenty-two years on what is now known
as Star Route 2 North of Taylor."
"Dad told me when he was a young boy he would occasionally find a buffalo skull on the prairie." . . . Virginia Perkins.

Letter from Joshua Frye Perkins, Taylor Nebraska, 5 April 1917
Read his opinion about going to War - - -

I think pretty strong about going to the War.  If I was a few years younger they would not have to call twist (twice) for me.  Where ever mortal man would dare to carry my country’s flag I would dare to follow.  I have followed it on a many a hard fought field and while I live and able to stand up it shall never lack for a defender_ But as I can not tell you all I think about the War as well.

Excerpted from his letter to his daughter, Hannah Perkins Knutson.

In 1870 Joshua Carter Perkins, his wife Sarah, and their children were living in Fayette County, Illinois, at Ramsey Township.  Joshua was born in Carter County, Tennessee as his middle name identifies.

Some two years before, a young Civil War Veteran, Joshua Frye Perkins had made his formal declaration from Ramsey Twp, Fayette, Illinois.
On December 27, 1876 Joshua Frye Perkins married Highly Perkins,  the daughter of Joshua Carter Perkins, and Sarah COOPER Perkins in Fayette, Illinois.  On that occasion, a touch of their southern heritage was present  in that Tennessee Nave, originally from Carter County, Tennessee, performed their marriage ceremony.

The 1880 Federal Nebraska census shows that - - -
the Joshua Carter Perkins' were living in Precinct 5, Custer County,

Joshua Frye Perkins' were living in Hall County, at Cameron Township

By 1886 the younger Joshua Frye Perkins' had joined Highly's parents, the Joshua Carter Perkins', and were
living in Custer County.
In 1900 all of the two families, including many of the children of Joshua Carter Perkins', were living in Custer County, and Highly and Joshua, and their six children were residents of Loup County.  All six of Highly and Joshua Frye Perkins' living children took homesteads in Loup County.  Their daughters, Hannah, Clara and Laura all taught school in Loup's rural schools.  Their son, Perry, was the mail-carrier for Loup County for goodly number of years.

Joshua Carter Perkins and Joshua Frye Perkins were not only father-in-law and son-in-law but they were also first cousins.  They shared the same East Tennessee-West North Carolina "roots" and ancestry.  Their fathers, Joseph and Amos Perkins were brothers, and  were both the sons of  Jacob and Nancy Ann (Graves) Perkins of East Tennessee.

The descendents of Joshua Carter Perkins and Joshua Frye Perkins no longer live in Loup County but can be found as near as Iowa and Missouri, and as far as Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon, and many points in between.  But some of us - -  occasionally come "home" for a visit, or are interested in  preserving the history of Loup County, Nebraska, including the families of those that were the Perkins' friends and neighbors  - - - not so very long ago.

Where were they in 1870?

Where were they in 1872?

Where were they in 1880?

Joshua Carter Perkins' were in Ramsey Twp, Fayette County, Illinois, as was his sister, Martha Perkins, and her daughters, Lucy, and Caroline Perkins.  William C. Miller, widower of Susannah Perkins Miller, and their children, John Pulaski Miller and Didama Miller Moore, also lived there.

According to the Loup County Centennial Book, 1883-1983,
the Perkins' had moved to
Nebraska by 1872.
These families included the Joshua Carter Perkins', Nancy (Pierce) Perkins, the Joshua Frye Perkins', and
the James Monroe Perkins.

The James Monroe Perkins Family lived in Howard County.  After 1885 they moved to Utah, and then Oregon.

Sarah Elizabeth Perkins, daughter of Sarah (Cooper) and Joshua Carter Perkins lived there with her husband, James H. Smouse.  After his death, she remarried, William H. Piggott.

Joshua Frye Perkins, and Highly Perkins were married in 1876, and the 1880 US Census shows them living in Hall County, with their two young children, Claud and Hannah.

Also, his mother, Nancy (Pierce) Perkins, widow of Amos Perkins is enumerated in that same census.

The 1880 US Custer, Nebraska census enumerates the family of Joshua Carter Perkins and Sarah (Cooper) Perkins, which included their children, Amanda Hannah Perkins, John Amos Perkins, and William H. Perkins.

Sarah Elizabeth (Perkins) Smouse Piggott, was widowed by 1900 and is enumerated in the 1900 US Custer, Nebraska census.

The Loup County Centennial 1883-1983 Book records that by 1900, the family of Highly and Joshua Frye Perkins were now living in Loup County.  The 1900 US Loup County, Nebraska Census records the same information.

Sarah Perkins, daughter of Amos and Nancy (Pierce) Perkins, died before 1864.
Her husband, William A. Taulbee remarried, and Sarah and William's children are enumerated in the 1880 US Fleming, Kentucky census, including her daughter, Rebecca A. Perkins Gill.

Eliza Louisa Perkins was the second daughter of Amos and Nancy (Pierce) Perkins.  She married  Andrew Yates, and they had three sons, James, John, and Lewis Yates.
She is enumerated in the 1860 Federal Bath, Kentucky census living with her brothers.  It would appear that she did not live beyond the Civil War.
