The Johnstons
of Bertie Township,
Ontario, Canada
c.1820 to
present
My family has lived in the former Bertie Township (now the Town of Fort
Erie) for nearly 200 years. Several members of my family,
including myself
still reside
within a few miles of the Johnston farm owned by our oldest known
relative, John K. Johnston. He was born in 1803 in Enniskillen
Ireland. It is unknown if he
immigrated to Canada by himself as a young man or came as a child
with his family. There are several Johnstons who lived in the
area around the turn of the 17th century but I have not been able to
link any of them to John K. since records from that time are largely
nonexistant. He did however marry Suzannah Winger about
1828, which is the first evidence we have of his living in Canada. The
Winger family emmigrated from Germany to Bertie Township in the late
1700's and figured prominently in the early days of
the Bertie Brethren in Christ Church. The links below will lead
you to a summary of my genealogical
research. (It is not entirely up to date and it does require a
bit of
editing) If you feel that you have any information that could add to
mine, or if you feel that I may be able to help you, please feel free
to contact me.
