William Hopton

William Hopton

(My 2xGreat-Grandfather)

Photo taken in 1912

William must have been a real live-wire, just looking at his occupations, he often had several jobs at the same time,
(so I know where I got my work-aholic trait from!) He still had 3 jobs the year he died in 1916, at the age of 75.
Somehow he also found time for music, he played the violin and chello. His children and grand-children were also very musical.
He took part in Leeds Music Festival, singing (alti) in the Chorus in 1877.

"He was a pillar of his church, a church warden for 40 years, and was very musical, played the violin and cello. He formed a little orchestra, and Ma used to tell me he neglected his plumbing business for his music. I always remember him coming to dinner every third Sunday from his church in his top hat and morning coat, which all old gents wore at that tine, like the young ones wear jeans now". Sybil Hopton, (Willaim's youngest grandaughter).

Photos

This group has just been identified, thanks to my 2nd cousin, Izzy, who found me via this website.
Amazingly we both had copies of the same picture, and luckily hers had the names on the back.
It is interesting to note that the photos are subtly different and neither appears to be the orignial. There is more detail (such as chair legs) on Izzy's (to the right). But also there appears to be something in the foreground, infront of the picture, leading me to believe this is a photo of a photo!

It is William Hopton (left), with wife, Eliza and her brother Samuel Hall Cliff

I believe this is also Eliza
