Extract from Journal of H. H. Todd

William Gray Todd was educated at Luton School. After leaving school went into the drapery trade as Assistant.
When about 24 years of age, 1865, he decided to marry, his choice was a lady Miss Emma Batterson of Henlow, Beds whose father
was a wheelwright and carpenter of the village.
Married at Henlow Church, after wedding breakfast left Henlow by carriage and pair of grey horses for their new home in Luton.

Mr W G Todd went back to business for a while. Later joined with a Mr Elliott in straw hat manufacture at Luton, afterwards
opening a branch at Fenny Stratford, Bucks.

His family had increased to 3, two sons and one daughter, Herbert Howson, William Percy and Emma Florence.
Moving from Luton to Fenny Stratford was an eventful change. A large house and garden where we used to play and
workroom and plaithall. Saturday mornings we were all three children taken to Bletchley out of the way of buyers of plait
on a donkey with baskets hung down each side.

But misfortune overtook the business and Father was reduced to poor circumstances and we had a rough time.
At Fenny Stratford another daughter born, Nellie. After we moved to Brackley.
From there Father was employed by the Midland Railway Co as singleman (sic). The came a change, Father was moved to Leeds.

Father was stationed at the Signal Box at Hemslet Station, he had to walk 2 miles each way;
afterwards removed to Arnly Bridge Box, then to Holbeck Junction which was much nearer home.
While at Holbeck an awful Railway accident happened between two Pullman Car Trains. Several killed and many injured.
After that was moved to Wellington Station as Parcel porter and gradually rose to be an Inspector or Milk and Fruit.
