Where are the Cowlings from?
These maps show the distribution of people with the surname Cowling in 1881 and 1998.It clearly shows a hot-spot in West Yorkshire, which is where no doubt my ancestors adopted the name Cowling. It is a name based on a place, and there are indeed 2 places Cowling in Yorkshire. I'm not sure if the grouping in the far south West of England are in any way connected. It may be a second, co-incidental occurrence of the name. You can see how the family spread out between 1881 and 1998. It is a fairly rare name, with 2628 people called Cowling in 1881 and 3353 in 1998.
