The within Inventory of the Estate of Arch. Hughes Decd was returned by the appraisers therein named and ordered to be recorded.

NOTES: ditto - the aforesaid thing or same as before is applied to both the line above and when two items are listed on the same time-the ditto in connection to the second items may refer back to the first item on that line. (quotation marks) used in the final money listings should be interpreted as representing zero and not as another form of ditto [ = 0] - some examples from the inventory:
1 Shotgun 20/ [twenty shillings] with a final total of 1 or better understood as 1 and no shilling and no pence.
1 Loom 12/ [12 shillings] 1 Real 5/ [5 shillings] for a total of 17 shillings with no pounds or pence.
2 Wine glasses 2/ [two shillings] 1 Pitcher 2/6 [2shillings & 6 pence] for a total of 4 shillings and 6 pence.
The same holds for those with no price breakdown in the description. Example: 1 pr. tongs and two shovels was valued at 2 shillings and 6 pence, thus, the marks under pounds should be zero and not as another form of ditto causing the 5 pounds from the above entry to apply.

Horses - at least six of the estates horses had names noted in the inventory.
Shoats - young hogs.
English money system was still common in Virginia - the units are pound - shilling - pence ; a shilling equals the twentieth part of a pound, and equal to twelve pence. Pound is more correctly the pound sterling. In this inventory the pound sign will be .
All items enclosed in brackets [ ] are the authors and hopefully used for clarification.

POSSIBLE:
1). How - could be a Howell, which was a special plane-like cutter used to trim off or bevel one edge of staves on hooped barrels or other items of wooden construction.
2). 1 Pott 6/. 1 Greo Iron 7/6 - could be that item listed after the Pott was perhaps gray Iron worth 7 shillings and 6 pence.
3). 1 Salt Celler 1/. Sugar Box & Ros D 1/10 - the single Salt Celler was a container for salt much like present day salt shaker but much larger; sugar came in hard loaves and was scraped off for use; in the third portion of the listing Ros D the D with the raised o is thought to represent ditto thus the Sugar Box & Ros D meant the unexplained Ros was stored in a box. The inventory takers made an error on his multi-listed line as the total value should have been 2 shillings and 10 pence instead of their 2/11 on the inventory.
4). 1 Tea Cannister 1/. 1pr. Sunfferrd trea 4/. -- the first item deals with a tea container, but the second item is apparently not connected to the first in any way. The Sunfferrd trea is part of a pair and the S-word could be either Sunfferrd or possibly Snufferrd. An easy guess without the trea would be snuffers, but with the extra word, it is still a mystery.
