This small bible belonged to Asa Harrington Lumsden,
and the story of how it saved his life
during World War I is told below by his nephew Percy Lumsden:

This little testament has a rather significant history or relationship to our family.
My Grandmother gave it to her son, Harry Lumsden (Uncle Hal to us),
when he was going overseas, and she told him,
"Keep it with you always."
He carried it in his breast pocket of his tunic.

Just before World War I ended, during heavy shelling by the Germans,
he was hit in the left breast, and although rendered unconscious for eight days,
he was nevertheless saved by this testament.

As you can see, the shrapnel, or fragment from the shell,
had it not been for the testament being there, would have killed him.
