COMPANY NEWS; UNITRIN AGREES TO PAY $27 MILLION IN DISCRIMINATION SUIT
Published: May 3, 2002
Unitrin Inc., a life insurance provider, will pay $27 million to clients overcharged because they are black, according to a settlement reached yesterday in a class-action lawsuit. The money will go to about 467,000 people who held policies sold from the 1930's through 1970. Insurance companies during that time often charged black customers more than whites on the grounds that they were perceived to have a shorter life span and higher insurance risk. Unitrin officials said the settlement would reimburse blacks who unfairly spent more money for coverage equal to that of whites. The company, based in Chicago, is the parent of the Union National Life Insurance Company, the United Insurance Company of America and the Reliable Life Insurance Company.
WHEN MY FATHER DIED IN JANUARY OF 1997, UNITED DID NOT PAY ONE DIME TO MYSELF OR ANY OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, THAT I KNOW OF.
