Shockey, Barbara Regina Ebben Obituary

Obituary

SHOCKEY--Barbara Regina (Deane) passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital on Friday, March 1, 2002 at the age of 98 years.

Deane is survived by four sons: Hal (Lil) of Saskatoon, Glen of Perdue, Verne (Jo) and Cliff (Sylvie) all of Vanscoy; three daughters, Norma (Keith) Colburn and Eleanor Ryan (special friend Joe) all of Delisle, SK. and Shirley (Ron) Kowalski of Saskatoon; a younger sister Helen (Jim) Smith; step sister Mary Lozaway; sister-in-law, Thelma Gordon of Delisle; brother-in-law Dale (Phyllis) Shockey; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Elmer in 1989; sons Gerald at the age of 45 and Melvin at birth; Grandson Earl in 1961; son-in-law Howard Ryan in 1989; daughters-in-law Jackie in 1997 and Helene in 2001; her parents, two brothers, three sisters and one half sister.

Mother was born March 17, 1903 and was the first white baby girl born in the Vanscoy area. As Saskatchewan was not yet a province in 1903, her birth certificate states "Northwest Territories".

She attended Krumpleman School and after working a few jobs in Saskatoon, she married Elmer Shockey in 1926. They farmed side by side at Vanscoy for many years and later retired to Vanscoy where they became janitors of the school. After Dad's illness she moved into Maple View Lodge in Vanscoy where she resided until last summer, when she moved to Porteous Lodge in Saskatoon, where she remained until her passing.

We the family would like to thank the Porteous Lodge staff for the care given to our mother. Mom was one of those special people that gave more during her lifetime than she took. She had a great work ethic and a wonderful sense of humour which she kept right to the end. Mom loved curling and playing cards. She enjoyed watching curling and the Blue Jays on T.V. She was looking forward to her 99th birthday on March 17, 2002. Her family was her greatest joy and she was always supportive of the many endeavors of her children and grandchildren.

The Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home (338-4th Ave. North) conducted by Rev. Jane Gallagher. Interment of cremated remains will take place at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Poreous Lodge (833 Avenue P North, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 2W5) or to the Canadian Cancer Society, Saskatoon Unit, (438 2nd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK, s7k 2c3).

Arrangements have been entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME. (244-5577)
