Obituary Florence
Emerson Shockey, 91, died December 14 at Kethley House, Benjamin Rose
Place in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was the daughter of Florence T. and Sam W. Emerson, president of the
Sam W. Emerson Co., leaders in construction in northeastern Ohio. At the
time of Mr. Emerson's death in January, 1968, the Plain Dealer stated,
"The metropolitan landscape is dotted with monuments to Mr. Emerson and
his way of doing business." Her maternal grandfather was William Dean
Taylor, president of the George Washington Company from 1911 until his
death in 1929.
Mrs. Shockey was a 1928 graduate of Hathaway Brown School, Shaker Heights
and a 1932 graduate of Mather College at Western Reserve University. She
taught second grade at Park School in Cleveland for several years.
Mrs. Shockey married Lovell Shockey in 1935. She has been a widow for
thirty years.
Mrs. Shockey was an active volunteer at Highland View Hospital, the Shaker
Heights Neighborhood Guild and Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights. At
Plymouth Church she served on many committees and groups such as the
Pastoral Search Committee, the Board of Deacons and the Women's
Association, of which she was President. She was named Woman of the Year
at the Church in 1976(?????).
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 5 at 2 p.m. at Plymouth
Church, Drexmore and Weymouth Roads, Shaker Heights.

Survivors include her son, Terry L. Shockey and his wife Barbara of
Cleveland Heights, her daughter Kate Shockey Lafrance and her husband Jean
of Kiawah Island, SC, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
