Obituary

OXNARD, Calif. - Savinah Audrey Harpending, 87, of Oxnard, Calif., formerly of Winfield, died May 25, 2002.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. June 16 in the Garcia Mortuary Chapel, 629 South A, Oxnard. The Rev. David Knapp will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexia of Santa Barbara, 3970 La Colina Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93130, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Harpending was born Dec. 15, 1914, in Marshfield, Mo., to Bessie and Stanley Shockey. Raised in Winfield, she graduated from Winfield High School in 1932 and from Southwestern College in 1936.

She was a teacher and a physical therapist while serving as a captain in the U.S. Army. She lived in Penn Yan, N.Y., for 30 years prior to retiring to California in 1982.

Her husband, Dr. Richard Harpending, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Hannah Lopez; two sisters, Vierdonia Mae Leopold and Louise Ralph; a brother, Winfred Shockey; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
