Now, does anyone know WHERE these folks are today?  Maybe I could do an update here, if my former classmates wouldn't mind?

The school has not changed in the years since I attended there.

A long set of stairs led to the front doors, but the building also had entrances at both ends (one closest to the back of the church, the other across from the Convent's back door).  The school housed eight (8) grades, four classrooms on the bottom floor and 4 on the top floor.  Every classroom had a wall of windows along the back of the building, facing the alley.  Under the windows were shelves and the heating system's vents (was it vents? or radiator?).  The principle's office was a small room between the 3rd and 4th grade rooms.  The boys' and girls' bathrooms were along the front of the building on both floors.  The basement had a cafeteria with long folding tables and wooden folding chairs, with the kitchen at the end closest to the Convent side.

Being the 1960s, everything we did outside the classroom was done by walking single file, or double lines, even for fire drills when we were taken outside (even when it was freezing), or for "Bomb Shelter" drills when we were taken to the cafeteria.  Several times in the lower grades, I remember we had "inspections" when the Sisters took us into the hallway with boys along one wall and girls along the other wall.  The Sisters had the girls (especially the older girls) kneel down in the hall so they could see if the hemline of our dress/skirt touched the floor (i.e. hit at our knees).  My sisters who were older than I was hated those inspections.  The boys had to have their hair cut to above the collar -- and those nuns even checked our fingernails and if we had washed behind our ears!

Our playground area in front of the school was paved over with asphalt to give more parking on Sundays; I always hated that hot, oily black parking lot.  There wasn't one tree where we could get shade!  In the summers, inside the building was as hot as it was outside on the playground.

I had a few favorite teachers: Sister Incarnato(spelling?); Sister Noel; and Miss Lynn Cosgrove

Others remembered:

Teachers from St. Hilary Grade School:
First Grade: ? Sister Incarnato(spelling?)
Second Grade: ? Sister Noel?
Third Grade: Sister M. Apollonia. She was very old at the time. I think she was the oldest teacher/Sister in the school back then. She used to fall asleep at the desk some days, and always carried a white hanky to wipe her nose.
Fourth Grade: Mr. Trapuzzano. Most of the older girls thought he was very cute.
Fifth Grade: ?
Sixth Grade: Miss Marilyn "Lynn" Cosgrove.
Seventh Grade: Mrs. Sworden. She was a very young woman who married the son of my next door neighbor. She was killed in a traffic accident that year.
Eighth Grade: Sr. Evangilista (spelling?)

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
