The Penix book files

About these files:

The following directions are for downloading individual files from this site for the book that I wrote for my aunt Jessie Underwood. These files are to be used for personal use only and may not be published commercially in total or in part. These files represent many years of research on the part of Jessie for her family and I tried to summarize some of what she had collected in book form.

The book covers from the 1600's starting with Isaac Penix and continues through Joshua, Isaac, James, William Washington and John Penix, the father of Jessie. Also included in the book are the brothers and sisters of Jessie along with their families. The book also contains pictures, copies of documents, news articles and other things about the people in our family.

Downloading the files:

The files are in pdf format and need to be read by Adobe Reader which is a free program used as a helper with Netscape and Internet Explorer. The best version to use would be the current version but it is possible to use as low as version 3.2 also. You can find the Adobe program by checking the helpers in your browser through your preferences for the browser. If you don't have at least version 3.2 then you can upgrade by visiting the Adobe.com site and the free programs they offer for downloading. I'd suggest you do this before you attempt to download any of the files.

It is best after downloading and installing the upgrade to boot the new Adobe Reader since many times the old preferences for the older version will still be in your preference file causing and error when you try to read new files because the preference will still indicate it is the older version. After booting the newer version you can quit the program and the new preferences will be then saved.

On a Mac just click on any of the addresses (below) and the file will be downloaded, saved and will appear in Adobe Reader after it is downloaded.

On an IBM or compatible you need to right click to save the file to your desktop.

Once downloaded and showing in Adobe Reader you can print the files if you want by using the Adobe print button.

Printing the files:

When printing the files I have found it best to print them on 3 hole drilled paper, double sided is best when printing, which can be obtained at most office supply stores. The pages can then be put in a 3 ring notebook which can again be obtained at almost any office supply store. I purchased notebooks with the plastic cover and placed the picture that prints first inside the plastic cover. I also found that some printing sticks to the cover so placing a blank page at the front and back stops that problem.

Order of the pages:

Each file name indicates the order it is to appear in the book. The first file name at the end contains the order. At the end is cov1.pdf. The one after "cov" indicates that it is the first section of the book. The URL addresses aren't listed in order but rather as they were placed on disks where I kept them. I placed them to use the least amount of disks possible.

Missing sections:

There are no sections 13, 14 and 15. These sections were for the Smith side (mother of Jessie) so I didn't include them at this site.

Appendix:

The appendix, last two sections, still contain articles for the Smith family that were referred to in the Smith part of the book. Since the two families didn't appear in the appendix of the book in order I didn't delete the Smith parts mainly to save me work in deleting and combining two different parts of the book.
