Second Generation

John Millet, son of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, born 29 September 1764 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut. Died May 1833 in Darke County, Ohio. Married Mary Moore. Mary was born 1782 in Connecticut, died 7 Dec, 1851 in Indiana, buried in Wilson Cemetery, Monon, White County, Indiana. Had the following children:

John, born about 1800 in New York
Hannah, born about 1805 in New York
Esther, born about 1807 in New York, died about 1843, White Co. Indiana
Merrit, born 10 Nov. 1811 in New York, died 15 Dec. 1876, Randolph Co., Indiana
Mary, born about 1818 in New York
Wealthy, born 28 Feb. 1820 in New York, died 8 Feb. 1903, Randolph Co., Indiana

 Sources include:
1. John Millet's will dated 7 April 1831, Darke County Ohio, presented to the Court of Common Pleas 16 May 1833. Copy in my possession.
2. Handwritten document shared by Jim Stevens which was written by John Millet Jr., dated 24 Aug 1878.
3. Mary Moore Millet's death date from "Master Index of White County Indiana Burials," published by White County Historical Society 1996" b? d. 12/7/1851 aged 69y, 8m, 18d, buried in the Wilson Cemetery, Monon, White Co.
4. 1850 Census, White Co. Indiana
5. 1850 Census, Darke Co. Ohio

 Note: Names of John Millet's (Sr.) two youngest daughters were not given in his will, so the "Mary" and Wealthy" listed above are not proven. There are marriage records for both of the above daughters in Darke Co. Ohio, hence our speculation on their names.

Barbery/Barbara Millet, daughter of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 22 February 1766 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut. She is named "Barbara Bridges" in her father's will. No further information has been located for Barbara. She may be the wife of Joshua Bridges, who is found in the 1800 Census of Palmyra, Ontario Co. NY living near John Hurlbut, Ebenezer Reed, Daniel Millett and Samuel Millett. Enumerated in their household are 4 males under the age of 10 and 2 females under the age of 10. I also have a copy of a land record between Joshua Bridges and Nathan Morris dated 20 June 1899, Palmyra, Ontario, New York

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Andrew Millet, son of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 29 Nov. 1767 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut, and died probably in Wayne County, New York between 1830 & 1840. Information on his descendants is strictly circumstantial, based on a hand-written paper in the possession of Sandy Groezinger of Jo Daviess Co. IL, and early New York censuses. There are also land records for Andrew, one dated 10 Nov. 1800, Sodus, Ontario County New York, the second dated 1 April 1825, Ontario, Wayne Co. New York. Andrew has also been located on the 1800, 1810, and 1830 censuses, information following. And he is mentioned in "History of Wayne Co. NY, by Prof. Wm. McIntosh c1877:"
". . . Andrew became insane and hung himself. His mind was deranged from the belief that the world would soon be without wood, as it was being so rapidly cut away. Had he realized the mighty carbon heaps stored just beneath the soil in such immense tracts, it would have gone far to affect a cure."
Attempts for more concrete evidence regarding Andrew's family have thus far proven fruitless.
From Census information:
1800 New York, Ontario County, Sodus twp.:
2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44; 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44
1810, New York, Ontario County:
3 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45
1820 (haven't located him yet in this census)
1830, New York, Wayne County, Walworth twp.:
1 male under 5; 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; 2 females under 5; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 50-60
In the 1850 census for Walworth, Wayne Co. New York, there is a 77 year old Sally Millett living in the household of Horace and Betsey Simmons. This "could" be the aged widow of Andrew.
Probable children of Andrew and Sally _______ Millet:
William, born between 1794 and 1800 in New York, died before 1850, possibly in Jo Daviess Co. Illinois
Alexander, born between 1794 and 1800 in New York
Hiram, born about 1797 in New York
Rhoda, born 1800 in New York, died 1859 in Jo Daviess Co. Illinois
"A daughter who married a Simmons" (could be Betsey, born 1805 in New York)
Martin, born 1809 in Wayne Co., New York, died 6 June 1878 in Madison, Buchanan, Iowa
The above children are listed as children of "Alexander and Sarah or Catherine Millett." Checking the 1800 and 1810 censuses, Andrew is the only Millet(t) who has enough children to qualify as the father of the above. Still hoping to find a will and/or the Land donation packets for Hiram and Martin, who took out donation land claims in Illinois. These may give us the information we need to verify or disprove Andrew's family.
PLEASE NOTE: The above children are not "proven" to be those of Andrew Millet. More research is needed.
Hannah, daughter of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 18 November 1769 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut. She is listed as "Hannah Hurlbut" in her father's will. The LDS IGI lists a marriage between Hannah Millet and John Hurlbut in July, 1786, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. There are references to her father having been in this area prior to his move to Ontario County, New York. The following children are listed in the LDS IGI. I have not attempted to research them any further at this time.
Anna, born 21 Aug 1787, Wyoming Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Rhoda, born 22 Jan 1789, Wyoming Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Jeremiah, born 18 Feb. 1791, Wyoming Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Silas, born 28 June 1793, Wyoming Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Julius, born 4 July 1795, Wyoming Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
John, born 30 Oct 1799, Palmyra, Ontario, New York
Francis, born 16 May 1802, Palmyra, Ontario, New York
Herman, born 5 Sept. 1804, Palmyra, Ontario, New York
Charles, born 29 May 1807, Palmyra, Ontario, New York
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Samuel, son of Jonathan and Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 6 February 1772 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut. He died 16 March 1847 in Ontario County, New York. He married Rachel Douglass, daughter of Samuel and Agness (Edmond) Douglass 7 February, 1799. They had the following children:

Milton, born 30 Nov. 1800 in Palmyra, Ontario, New York
Mary, born 11 Feb 1802 in Williamson, Ontario, New York
Nancy, born 30 May 1803 in Ontario Co., New York, died 1837
Anne, born 21 March 1806 in Williamson, Ontario Co. New York
Marcus, born 20 Feb. 1808 in Ontario County, New York
Samuel Douglas, born 16 Dec., 1809 in Ontario Co., New York
Clark, born 13 Dec 1812 in Ontario Co., New York
John, born 18 March 1815 in Ontario Co., New York
Sarah Ann, born 21 Aug. 1817 in Belfast, Allegany, New York, died 9 Aug. 1820

Sources of information include: "A Collection of Family Records," @1879 by C. H. J. Douglas; the LDS IGI, and many descendants who exchanged information on this family.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daniel, son of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 2 February, 1772 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut. Not much information has been found on Daniel at this point. He seems to have disappeared, and could have possibly moved to Michigan, as indicated by "A Collection of Family Records." There was a Millet(t) family in Lenawee County, Michigan very early on who could possibly be descendants of Daniel.
I have found Daniel in the 1800 & 1810 censuses in Ontario County, New York, as follows:
1800, Palmyra, Ontario Co. NY:
1 male 10-15; 3 males 16-25; 1 female under 10; 1 female 16-25; 1 female 45 & older
1810, Ontario Co. NY:
1 male under 10; 1 male 26-45; 1 female under 10; 1 female 26-45
It appears that his mother and 3 younger brothers were living in his household in 1800. I have found no further trace of Daniel in later censuses thus far.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nancy, daughter of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born approximately 1775, place unknown. She does not appear in the Voluntown Vital Records index, but is listed in her father's will as "Nancy Reed." She may be the wife of Ebenezer Reed, who is living near her brothers Daniel & Samuel and her brothers-in-law Joshua Bridge and John Hurlbut in the 1800 Census for Palmyra, Ontario County, New York. I have made no further attempts to research this family at this time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William, son of Jonathan & Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born between 1777 & 1784. He does not appear in the Voluntown Vital Records index, but is listed in his father's will as "under age 21." He is listed in the 1810 Census for Ontario County, New York, with the following in his household:
2 males under 10; 1 male 16-26; 1 female 16-26; 1 female over 45
He may be the William Millet enumerated in the 1820 Census for Jefferson County, Indiana, as follows:
1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26
He may also be the William Millett mentioned in a law suit brought against John Cutler by Alexander Millett in Geauga County, Ohio April 30, 1832. Briefly, the suit lists William Millett as the father of said Alexander, who was placed with John Cutler on June 1st, 1813 at Newberry, Geauga County, Ohio. Alexander was 4 years old at the time, and was to live and serve with him until he reached the age of 21 years. At that time, Mr. Cutler was to provide "80 acres of land, a good horse, saddle and bridle, bed and bedding, one bow, two suits of clothes. He was to provide reading and writing skills as well, and Alexander was to serve him faithfully during this time period. The suit claims that John Cutler turned Alexander Millett out on 16 January, 1830. Suit is for the amount of $100.00.
I have not been able to find William Millet after 1820. In the 1830 Census for Jefferson County there is a listing for "Alven" Millet. A possible son?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jonathan, son of Jonathan and Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born between 1777-1790, age calculated from the only census he appears on--the 1820 Census for Caneadea, Allegany County New York. He is mentioned in his father's will as "under age 21." He is also mentioned in a History of Allegany County New York as helping build a bridge across the Genesee River. I have not found him in any later records, nor have I attempted to search further in other areas for him. In the 1820 Census his household includes 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45; 3 females under 10, 1 female 26-45.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alexander, son of Jonathan and Jennet (Edmond) Millet, was born 20 August, 1790 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut, according to the LDS IGI. He first appears in the 1820 Census for Caneadea, Allegany County, New York. Living in his household are himself (aged 26-45), one female under age 10, 1 female age 16-26. He has not surfaced in any later census. In "Allegany and Its People, A Centennial Memorial History, 1795-1895" by John S. Minard, published 1896, pg. 846:
Merritt Millett, son of Ephraim and Rachel (Graham) Millett, was born in Cuba 10-31-1845. His grandfather ALEXANDER MILLET came to Belfast in 1837 . . . Thus we have the name of one child for Alexander--Ephraim. The article further states Alexander died in 1864. No further information has thus far been uncovered on Alexander.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anna, daughter of Jonathan and Jennet (Edmond) Millet, is listed in her father's will as Anna. She was apparently unmarried at the time. I have not located any further information on her.

Third Generation

John, son of John & Mary (Moore) Millet, was born about 1801 in Pennsylvania. He married Sybil Potter, date and place unknown. In "History of Darke County Ohio, volume II, published in 1914, pg. 242 has a biography of "Milton R. Millette." John & Sybil are mentioned as the grandparents of Milton, and that this John named the village of Ithaca. John and Sybil had the following children:

Elmira, born about 1826
George Washington, born about 1828
Melissa, born about 1833 in Darke County, Ohio; died 1928 in Rossburg, Ohio
Wesley, born 29 September 1836 in Ithaca, Darke Co. Ohio; died 12 June 1919 in Ansonia, Darke, Ohio

John, born 10 Oct. 1850
Malinda, born 29 Jan 1853
James A., born 6 July 1856

Wealthy, born 28 Feb. 1820 in New York, died Feb. 1903. She married Isaac Kaucher 23 Dec. 1835 in Darke Co., Ohio. Isaac was born about 1806 in Pennsylvania. Their children:

Washington
Margaret
Elizabeth, born about 1839 in Ohio
John, born about 1846 in Ohio

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mary, born about 1824, married (1) Jacob B. Long (died before 8 Aug. 1848 in Darke Co. Ohio); (2) John Reed, born about 1815 in England.
Children by Jacob Long:
George, born 12 April 1845 in Darke Co., Ohio
Children by John Reed:
Clara, born about 1850, White Co. Indiana
Andrew Millet was born 29 Nov. 1767 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut, and died before 1840 in New York, probably Ontario Co. No definite record of his marriage has been located, but it is believed his wife was named Sally. In the 1850 census of Walworth, Wayne Co. New York, Sally Millet, age 77, is listed in the household of Horace & Betsey Simmons.
Please Note: This family has not been proven yet, it is all based on circumstantial evidence thus far.
I have a copy of a paper listing the following Millett's as siblings:
Alexander,  Hiram, William, Martin, Rhoda, "and another daughter Mrs. Simmons." They are listed on the paper as children of Alexander Millett. However, the only Alexander's I have found so far were not old enough to be the father of children born before 1800. In checking early Ontario and Wayne Co. NY censuses, the only Millet(t) with enough children to qualify as the father of the above children is Andrew, son of Jonathan and Jenet. So far I have been unsuccessful in locating a will listing his children for verification. My next step will be to locate land records that may show children for Andrew. Several of these children were granted land based on an Act of Congress dated April 24th, 1820. Andrew was a veteran of the War of 1812, very possibly these children were given land based on that fact.
Children:
William, born about 1794, died before 1850. Married Aurinda about 1815 in New York. Aurinda was born about 1796 in New York. Their children:
Aurinda, born 16 Aug 1816, New York
Jane, born about 1818, New York.
Alexander, born about 1820, New York
Mary, born about 1823, New York (note: my gg grandmother)
Lyman, born 1826 in Ohio, died 12 Feb. 1856, Jo Daviess Co. IL
Andrew, born about 1830 in Ohio
Emory, born about 1831 in Ohio
Martha, born about 1835 in Ohio
Eliza, born about 1839 in Ohio
Alexander, born about 1795 in New York. Married Ann Catherine Roscrans. Ann was born 29 Jan 1798 and died 24 Nov. 1849 in Jo Daviess Co. IL. Possible children for Alexander & Ann Catherine:
Ann Catherine, born 29 Dec. 1818
William, born 22 June 1822
Van Rensalaer, born 20 Feb 1824
Jonathan, born 20 May 1826
Samuel Merret, born 3 Feb 1828
Mahala Jane, born 18 April 1830
Martha Ann, born 19 April 1832
Elizabeth, born 25 April, 1833
Harriet, born 27 April, 1841
This family was one of the earliest in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. The Jo Daviess Co. USGenWeb page has a photo of early settlers at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~iljodavi/PhotoGallery/EarlySettlers.htm Alexander Millet is among these settlers. His wife is buried in the Morseville-Plum River Cemetery. Alexander went to the California Gold Rush, probably after the death of his wife. He is mentioned in the "Gold Rush Letters," also available on the Jo Daviess County web site. In the 1850 census, several of his children are living together in one household: William, Elizabeth, and Harriet. Not far away is "Aunt Orinda," widow of William.
Hiram was born about 1797 in New York. He married Pauline Chase in 1819 in New York. Pauline was born about 1800 in New York. This paper lists the following children:
Maria (married a Mr. Smith)
Harriet (married a Mr. Cress)
Lucy (married her cousin, Emery Millet, a son of William)
Pauline (married Whitson)
Hiram Jr. (married Martha Davis)
I can find nothing to indicate that Maria married a Smith, or that Harriet married a Cress, or that Pauline married a Whitson. I did find a marriage between a Harriet Millett and Harrison Whitson, but this Harriet could be the daughter of Alexander. More research is necessary to sort this family out.
More to come:
