The Daily Family in Hamilton County

DALY

The surname (O) Daly ( and its variants Daily, Dailey, Daley etc.) is O Dalaigh in Irish, deriving form Dalach meaning one who is present at assemblies; the root word is Dail, now the official title of the parliament of the Republic of Ireland. A connection is possible between the meaning of the name and the long tradition of scholarship and poetic achievement associated with those who bear it, since the ollamh of Gaelic Ireland had a place of honour at the tribal dail as a man of learning and a poet. The medieval genealogists located their homeland in the present Co Westmeath, and they spread throughout the county by acting as ollamhs to the most prominent families. From a very early date families of the name were also prominent in Co. Cork, and especially in the area around the peninsulas of Muintervarra, or Sheeps Head, in west Cork. The likeliest explanation is that the name had a separate origin in the south. Even so, the ODalys of Desmond had an equally strong association with poetry and learning: so potent were the poems of Aonghas O Dalaigh of Ballyroon that he was murdered by one of the victims of his satires. The name is now common throughout Ireland, with the greatest concentrations in the south and west, and in Co. Westmeath. (MORE)

John W. Daily (Dailey or Daly), Sr. was b. ca 1777 in VA and d. 26 Oct 1865 in Hamilton Co., IL. at age 88.  He and his wife, Polly Maulding ( Parents ) , are buried in Ten Mile Cemetery.  He was a charter member of this church which was started in 1820, one of the three oldest churches in IL.  He was in Virginia prior to 1803, NC prior to 1807, then back in Virginia and in KY prior to 1812, and was one of the early settlers of Hamilton Co., for he and his family were there prior to 1815. (It is interesting to note that possibly Polly was born in 1763 and that there was a stepson William.)

His father was John Daily born ca 1763.  Who had married Elizabeth Wilson, dau. of George Wilson.  He was a private in the Revolutionary War, enlisting 5 Mar 1781 from Berkley Co., VA and served in a Company of the 4th Virginia Regiment in a Battalion composed of the different Regiments of the Virginia Line commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Posey.  Since the biographies state that Posey was at Yorktown, it seems quite probable that John Daily was at the seige and the surrender of Yorktown on Oct 19, 1781, one of only 9,000 continental troops.   Between 1 Sep and 1 Dec 1782, he was transferred to a Company that was designated at various times as captain Clough Shelton's 1st Company and a Company of the 6th Virginia Regiment, same Battalion.  On 21 Jun 1785, he was granted 200 acres (Virginia Land Warrant) for service in the war.  John Daily made application for pension 25 May 1818 at which time he resided in Hampshire Co., VA.  His pension was allowed for two years and six months actual service as a private in the Virginia Troops, Revolutionary War. The pension started on July 31,1820 when he was 72 years old and was for $96.00 annually. For his service he was granted 300 acres of land on June 21, 1785. He later died in Springfield, VA on May 7, 1830
NOTE: The information above is mostly found at http://hamilton.ilgw.org/misc/faminf01.htm , but , seems inconsistent due to the closeness of the two given birth dates of 1763 and 1777 for proposed father and son! Unless there are errors in these dates which is not unusual for geneological records. In the 1800 Virginia tax list at http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/ Virginia TaxListCensuses/ 1800index/ 1800D-index1.htm there are two John Daileys listed, one in Mecklenberg and one in Norfolk county. The one in Mecklenberg can be ruled out since he was a land owner and he had a large family at that time. Interestingly also in Norfolk was an Eilzebeath and an Enoch Dailey. Elizabeth being the name of the wife of the John Dailey in West Virginia, the Rev. War Vet given as the proposed father. None of this family are on the available tax lists in 1790.

Most of the descendants of George and Anna Daily have moved from Hamilton County, but for many years they had a reunion on every Memorial day at Blooming Grove where George and Anna are buried. Most would first visit Ten Mile and then go on to Blooming Grove. Below are Herman, Leslie, and Harry Daily at one of the Blooming Grove reunions. Herman and Harry were twins, born on 7 Aug. 1892 in Hamilton county.
