The Distance Charts were created so that participants can identify how closely related they are to other participants.  The charts reflect genetic distance from each participant.  More information about genetic distance can be found on this pages:

12 Marker Genetic Distance Chart

The table below reflects the genetic distance between the participants results with their 12 marker test results in.  A distance of 0 is an exact match, a distance of 1 is a single step mutation, etc..  The distance calculation was provide by Family Tree DNA group administration page.  By viewing the table on the 'Mills Y-DNA Results' page and the table below we can conclude who is probably related, for example:

bullet

Matches - Kits 5259, 6401, 8977 and 5262 reflect a distance of 011782, 7822 and 6823 match.  6384 and 5545 also match.  This means you share a common male ancestor.

bullet

Close Match - kit 5260 and compared to 5259 and 5626 reflect a distance value of 1 and have a single step mutation in alleles 391 for the 12 marker test, however, their distance is 6 for the 25 marker test.  Therefore, they are probably not related.

bullet

Next Closest match - Kits 5251 and 5257 reflect a distance value of 2 and have two single step mutations.
A single step mutation in alleles 390 and a single step mutation in 389.  There are more kits with a distance value of 2 reflected in the table below.  A distance of two means you are probably NOT related unless the mismatched markers are fast moving markers.
