At sometime around 1936/7 Albert changed his surname from that at
his birth (CREACALL) to BEVERLEY. This was for business reasons.
The nick-name "Bines" was acquired because of the fact that he was seldom seen without a Woodbine cigarette. This was told to me by Vince, his son. However, Albert gave up smoking when, or soon after, he emigrated to Australia.
Albert was in the retail trade for much of his working life. He may have acquired this skill by working for his mother in the business that was attached to the family home at Knoll Street. In the 1914 Kelly's Directory his mother, Emily, is discribed as a "Fruiterer" at 21 & 23 Knoll Street, Higher Broughton, Salford.
His businesses in England were all Newsagencies, eldest son Len told me.
Len: "Chester 1939(?) - 1941. When the regular paper boy failed to turn up in the morning Dad would shout for me to do the rounds. This was usually when it was pissing with rain or snowing".
"Wolverhampton 1941 - 1943. Dad did service in the auxiliary police force and also the fire service. I sat for an exam at primary school and was recomended for Grammar school. Attended one term at Wolverhampton Grammar. We ate well at this time. Dad's shop was close to a butcher's in the same row. Dad swapped cigarettes for meat".
"Stretford 1943 - 1945. 73 Rye Bank Road. Dad worked on radar production at Metropolitan Vickers, Trafford Park. Just round the corner from our house was Auntie Fanny's shop. I went to to Stretford Grammar. Also, introduced to Manchester United. Dad was a fan from way back".
"Mitcham, Surrey 1945 - 1946(?). Another newsagency. I went to Mitcham Grammar. (Wish I had a quid for every school I went to!)
"Carshalton Beeches 1947 - 1948. I think Dad was living off the races at this time. He used to take me to the dog track and near the race time he'd put me in the queue for the tote window. When your dad died I was left at home to look after the twins".
Albert was a keen gambler, in fact, Vince told me the reason he left the UK was because of the betting tax introduced by the Labour Government. In a letter to my mother, my father jokes that he won some money off Albert while playing cards. This seemed to be an unusual occurrence.
It is understood that he changed his name because he went into business with a man called Smith who had a musical instrament shop in Stockport, Cheshire. The man did not want the business name to be Smith & Creacall so Albert changed his name to Beverley, which happen to be the name of Mr Smiths house. In the 1934 Kelly's Directory for Cheshire there is a Smith, Sons & Co. Ltd., Pianoforte, Radio and Musical Instrament Dealers at 39 Lower Hillgate, Stockport. In the 1939 Kelly's Directory the name of the business is Smith Beverley Ltd.
While he was living at Wallington, Surrey, my father died. Vince remembers being left in the care of his (and my) auntie Fanny while Albert and Betty attended the funeral at Stretford, Manchester.
He did not have assisted emigration through the Australian Government scheme because of the waiting time. He flew to Australia at his own expense, taking Betty and the four children with him. The journey was in twelve stages and took seven days to complete due to the nature of flight at that time. This information was given to me by Len. (for more details see: Leonard13 BEVERLEY
On arrival in Australia he bought a mixed business which included the selling of wines. While Albert never drank alcohol, he did offer his opinion on the quality and taste of the wines he sold. This was told to me by Vince.

I went to Balgowlah Boys High School with Roy when we were both 12 years old and, at that time, were living at Warriewood. I enjoyed my life there very much as Roy and I were the best of mates. We played tennis, went swimming, played table tennis and even helped each other with school work. We both excelled at high school with myself topping the class of 44 kids and Roy coming 3rd in the three years we attended. After high school I attended the MBC college of Bookkeeping, part-time, and found a job in Sydney as a junior clerk for 4 pounds 15 shillings a week. After completing a year at MBC, I enrolled for the Chartered Accountants course, sitting twice a year for various subjects, such as commercial law, company accounts, business finance, tax, final accounting, auditing, etc. I found this quite hard going as I was working in the city and attending classes at the same time. I failed many times as the pass mark was between 60 and 70. I can remember that I sat for the tax paper about four times! However, Dad encouraged me to keep going and, finally, I complete the Professional year, which meant attending tutorials every two weeks, lectures at Sydney University, discussion groups arranged by myself in the office where I was working and studying at home seven nights a week. I passed in June 1976 and mum & dad sent a telegram to Oragon, USA, where I was holidaying at the time. What a relief that was and, of course, great celebrations took place soon after.
One year after that mum & dad moved to Queensland to live. I continued to work in Sydney for a firm of Chartered Accountants and that meant finding a flat of my own. By that time I was 33 years old and enjoying my life as a competition tennis player at Mona Vale and working as an associate in the firm at Cox Johnson & Co. I was an audit manager for a few large companies and travelled to the Solomon Islands on audit assignments, which I enjoyed very much, and for these reasons didn't want to move to Queensland. I had lots of tennis friends and we went out on Saturday night after the game and I was involved in various meetings at club level. I travelled to Queensland at Christmas to see mum & dad, Roy & Joan (they married in June 1974) and Vince and Betty.
About this time I got heavily involved with a religious cult known as the Word Wide Church of God. They believed in old Jewish laws such as the Passover, Feast of Unleaven Bread, Feast of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles. It was so legalistic that I could not work after sunset on Friday night. We did not believe in mixed marriages, long hair and make-up. About three years ago they recognised they were in error, according to the correct understanding of biblical terms, and changed the rules. Well, you've guessed what happened, thousands left the church, including myself, and, as far as I was concerned, didn't want anything to do with that type of religion again. But soon after me saying this, I attended a church about 30 minutes drive west of Blacktown known as Grace Bible Church. Del and I attended the church almost every Sunday until her father got very ill late 1998. We decided to travel to the central coast on a Sunday to visit Del's dad and mum, until her dad died on 24th November 1999. It was the worst day in Del's life when this occured as she was very close to him. He was a Church of Christ minister.
At the present time I do not attend any type of religion as I have had a gut full of it for most of my life. Religion to me only causes strife in families and relationships. I have seen it. Maybe I now call myself an atheist. You call on God for help? Why does society do this? I think the God concept is a myth as we are gods and control our own destiny, whether we are successful or not. Those who promote God and government to survive by force or fraud will perish from the terminal disease of mysticism and dishonesty. Why can't we say today that atheists go to heaven instead of Christians? It is only because this is what is taught in churches today, that, if we believe in Jesus, we will be saved.
