COOKSLEY FAMILY HISTORY

This is the story of my search for Cooksley ancestors. If you are considering a similar task you may find hints and tips from my efforts. Or you may decide to do something much less fraught.

The Cooksley family probably originated in the hamlet of COOKSLEY in the parish of Upton on the eastern edge of Exmoor, in the county of Somerset. Even on the 1881 census the largest number of Cooksleys were found in that county. My earliest relatives are found in Devon but not far from Upton.

INTERNET
There are lots of useful sites dealing with ancestry. Some are free while others charge a fee, especially those which provide an actual image of the information, so that you can decide for yourself what it says. New sites are being added all the time, even this one.

For general family history and lots of other useful information try genuki.

For searchable databases ancestry.com is very good. Another is findmypast., This has some different data and has a link with 1911 census. Free sites such as freebmd are growing rapidly. Some local authorities have put their own data on line at ukbmd.

Birth Death and Marriage Certificates can be ordered from the General Record Office. Other sites offer to get them for you but may charge more.

There are sites which allow you to share information with others. They suggest that someone may have already researched your family tree. However there is nothing better than the thrill of doing it yourself. By all means compare with others. Always be ready to accept that you may have got it wrong - but only if completely unavoidable. A good one of these sites is genesreunited.

Other addresses are mentioned later on this site.
